Posted: 3/29/14 at 9:01amGoin to the New Amsterdam tomorrow afternoon...looking for somewhere cheap to eat, (I know, theres nothing cheap in Times Square.) Was thinking Applebee's, because its cheap and I can get a few drinks...anyone been to this one before (46th street)? Any other options?

I personally don't think Applebee's is cheap (or good). It's a lot of money for basically adequate food. There are a lot of nice little restaurants on 9th avenue away from the touristy crowds on Broadway, 7th and 8th Avenues...which is where I usually go. However, if it's pouring rain which it might be based on the forecast, Applebee's is certainly close enough, as is BBQ and Chevy's Mexican restaurant...which all in the same area/block and basically have the same quality/price food but offer different options.

Posted: 3/29/14 at 9:21amI tend to eat in my hood before going to midtown, but when that doesn't happen... I often go to Maoz Vegetarian for a falafel and hummus on 43rd and 8th. This would be appropriate pre-Aladdin food, as well.

Posted: 3/29/14 at 10:22amThe Edison Hotel deli is my choice, lots of New Yorkers and actors there. Great big bowls of great soups for $5, blintzes, sandwiches. Very reasonable in the middle of theater district.

You can get the soup and salad bar (unlimited) for around $10. I always had a coupon, so I can't remember the exact price. But McDonalds in Times Square will be close to $8-10. The salad is okay, but the soups are really good.

Yes the Edison is totally my choice if you are looking for good prices and good food - and nothing fancy just really homey. I love this place. It's on 47th but you can enter at 46th between 8th and Broadway and walk through the lobby of the hotel.
If the weather is decent and you are willing to walk, I would definitely choose there. I am getting hungry just talking about it...

I second The Edison, the best food for the price. LOVE that place for pre and post Broadway eats. Extremely cool art deco design in the hotel lobby.
Oops, edited to say I "third" the Edison.

Posted: 3/29/14 at 11:01amget thee to 9th avenue or west. I like Shortys and 9th bet 41 and 42. above 42nd there are dozens of choices, cheaper and better than Times sq tourist garbage

Posted: 3/29/14 at 11:01amI highly recommend not going to Applebee's, the prices on chain sit-down restaurants in Time Square are absurd. Cafe Edison is great, for other cheap options check out Kobeyaki 40th/6th, Shake Shack 44th/8th, Kodama Sushi 45th/8th (great lunch specials), Chipotle 44th/9th and Mother Burger 49th Btwn 8th/9th (your cheap drinks option)

I second Edison and Kodama.
Also, it's a bit further, but Pongsri on 48th is great pre-show food. It's the fastest Thai I've ever had.

I will also throw in my vote for the Edison, just be aware that it's cash only. The chain restaurants in Times Square are not cheap at all, and the food is mediocre.
Also, I don't know how many people are going to be with you, but if there's a couple of you John's Pizza is quite good and not terribly expensive.

Posted: 3/29/14 at 12:09pmYou guys are great! thanks for all the advice. Yeah so no-go on applebee's... maybe I'll stroll around for a pizza shop or Edisons. Managed to find info on a dive bar named Jimmy's with great reviews and cheap drinks, so were all set! Thanks

Posted: 3/29/14 at 12:31pmReal Cheap? And good? Pret a Manger on 8th Ave between 49 and 50 has fabulous salads and sandwiches and is a hidden gem as not many people know about it (its mostly a lunch place that stays open till the theatres start) and its a good thing as it has limited seating, but there are seats and tables in the back.

Posted: 3/29/14 at 1:38pmOoh yes, CapnHook, I totally forgot about Schnipper's! I used to work in the area and I would eat there all the time, it's yummy and definitely better than something like McDonald's.
