Not Les Miz. The OBC is the weakest of the English-language cast recordings (note terminology, dammit), IMO.

Les Miserables (Original London Cast), Ragtime, or Urinetown. The double-CD of March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland is also a must.

It looks like your a Rent fan, so I think you might really enjoy tick, tick... BOOM! I picked it up after a RentHead friend of mine recommended it last year. I wasn't big on it at first, but now I love it.

Musicals don't have soundtracks, movies do. Shows have Cast Recordings. You should buy: Ragtime, Seussical, Birdie, 110, Grey Garens, the Spelling Bee and the original, not revivas l of Company, Chorus Line and Chicago. Why the originals? Elaine Stritch, Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, Jerry Orbach and the original cast of ACL.

You should also consider getting those obscure ones: The 1956 Candide with Barbara Cook, 70, Girls, 70 and the 1947 Allegro among them. Why? Glorious Broadway scores as they were heard originally.

Company- 1970 OBCR

Also consider:

Chicago- 1975 OBCR
A Chorus Line- 1975 OBCR
Grey Gardens- 2007 OBCR

Any of these is great.

ETA: Forgot: Ragtime 1998 OBCR

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Wow...so many good choices. I would definitely go along with Grey Gardens and as you can see, for me 'Curtains' is a given. re: Which OBCR?

High Fidelity, 110, and Ragtime are all good. Whatever you decide, there's hours of good listening on that list. Good luck with your decision. re: Which OBCR?

Piercemn: I just don't care for ALLEGRO, except for "The Gentleman is a Dope". What am I missing? I think the score is weird.

2. CHICAGO (OBCR)
3. A CHORUS LINE (OBCR)
4. RAGTIME
5. GREY GARDENS

Ragtime
Grey Gardens
Tick...tick...boom

And I agree with Lizzie - if you want a Les Mis, don't get the OBC. OLCR and Concert Cast are better (IMO)

Well, most people put "Ragtime" in their top grouping, so I'd strongly consider it (It's in mine too), but against the OBCR of "A Chorus Line", NOTHING beats it out for my top choice, all the time.

You need these five (and others have said these):

And don't get the revivals of any of them, the originals are much better.

Company
Chicago
A Chorus Line
Grey Gardens
Ragtime

Thanks everyone!

I'm definitely going to be picking up Ragtime (I have a burned copy of the first act already and love it) and most the original Company, and Tick, Tick...Boom as well.

But someday I'll hopefully have them all re: Which OBCR?
