White Angel...

So...with all this talk about Black Glinda, Black Dot, Black Roxie, etc. etc. etc....

Why can't Angel be white? It is not imperative to the character that he is Latino (Schunard???), nor is there any mention in the script. Yet, the casting director's still make it a point to cast him as Latino or black.

BUT, Mark's mother is black. (or at least she was when I saw the show)

Same goes for Joanne. Why does she have to be Black?
Why does Maureen have to be white?

Mark is Jewish - doesn't mean he can't be black...Sammy Davis Jr. was a jew, as is Rita Moreno...
And Roger? Doe she have to be white?
Tom Collins???
Benny???
Female Soloist #1???


Now, I know they stay true to the original casting choices, unless, of course, they are stunt casting...

But why?

Since this board has gotten so caught up in the color issue, I figure why not bring up a favorite amongst the group. Why is there a color issue in this show when there needn't be?
