2 Thoughts:
- I didn't know any of the Irving Berlin standards that weren't in the movie, so they were all new to me when I got the cast recording and I was so delighted to 'discover' them. What a gifted composer! If I'm pretty much smitten with this CD and ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, what other Berlin recordings should I seek out?
- Heads up! Though advertised in many places with the same logo, the current national tour is NOT the same Walter Bobbie production that has played runs at many regional theatres. It's mounted and produced by Theatre of the Stars in Atlanta, directed by Jeff Calhoun. While in general a very talented and worhty production, Calhoun includes a framing device that sets the whole show as if it were the movie being filmed. There are boom mics and spotlights on the edge of the stage constantly, and each scene begins and ends with a very loud studio bell. I was able to block it out after a while and enjoy the wonderful production that happens inside, but I still can't help but wish they hadn't included it altogether.

Hey.. Guess what? I got mine today too...
Can't wait to see this show at Wang Center. I am downloading it right now on my iTunes. Most likely I will give the physical CD to the Public Library here for their OBCR collections, which is not a lot , but I am helping them to build it up... its good there's iTunes (after I download the CD) I usually donate it to the library.

If you're living out on the west coast you don't have to wait for this. BWW's own Erika Amato is starring as "Betty Haynes" (the Rosemary Clooney role) in WHITE CHRISTMAS at the Welk Resort Theatre in Escondido, CA. The show runs though Dec. 30, 2007 and while it's mostly sold out, Erika said plenty of seats are available for Christmas eve. This may be the only time I wish I were living on the other coast!

Going back to the BOSTON PRODUCTION:
Here's info on Playbill about the Boston Cast:
http://www.playbill.com/news/article/112194.html
Brian d'Arcy James and Jeffry Denman will play the wartime buddies and post-war showbiz stars who fall for a sister act — and cheer up their old commanding officer — in the 2007 Boston engagement of Irving Berlin's White Christmas Nov. 23-Dec. 23.
Joining the men at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre will be Kerry O'Malley as Betty Hayes and Meredith Patterson as Judy Haynes. James, Denman and Patterson all appeared in the 2004 world premiere of this new stage version of the 1954 movie.
O'Malley appeared in the previous Boston engagement in 2005.
Directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Randy Skinner, the show was first tested in San Francisco and then blossomed in Bobbie-directed franchises in Los Angeles, Boston, Detroit, St. Paul and Toronto. Bobbie and Skinner are helming stagings in Toronto and Boston this year. There are also independent productions around the country.
Press night is scheduled for Nov. 28.
According to production notes, "In its Boston debut in 2005, Irving Berlin's White Christmas played to sold-out houses, embraced by audiences as a new holiday tradition. …The musical tells the story of two showbiz buddies putting on a show in a picturesque Vermont inn, and finding their perfect mates in the bargain."

re daspazoo's comment above:
Can someone please explain to me how this happens? I understand that the rights to this show were available to regional companies beginning somewhere in 2006. I understand that this means regional companies can put on the show and what we see is the same show, but a scaled back version as to sets and number of dancers due to budgetary constraints.
What I don't understand is how someone can take a licensed show and change the concept of it to suit their vision. I thought licensed meant protected? Am I wrong?
