Who else is excited about MARY POPPINS?

Posted: 8/2/06 at 10:41pmI don't think I've ever been excited about a Disney Musical. I saw it in London... and didn't much care for it. I'm hoping that the altantic crossing has strengthened it. Updated On: 8/2/06 at 10:41 PM

Posted: 8/2/06 at 11:19pmI'm pumped. I have my tickets and am flying up for the day to see it (I got a good airfare or this wouldn't be happening.) The orchestrations on the London Cast Album are the best I've ever heard period.

Posted: 8/2/06 at 11:21pmI didn't like it at all, in London, so I'm curious, why are you excited about it? If I were any less excited for it, I'd be dead.

LOL
To answer your question - I was able to see the show in London and I thought it was alright - I didn't really enjoy the new numbers that much, but I loved the fact that they extended the songs we all know and love. I also enjoyed the Special FX.
But thats just me.

Posted: 8/2/06 at 11:57pmWhat special effects did they have, besides the tap dancing on the proscenium (if that even counts)?

Posted: 8/3/06 at 12:05amI was very disappointed in it in London. The new songs were awful. The whole piece felt stale and by the numbers. To me it's for kids only.

Posted: 8/3/06 at 2:27amI'm really not at all...I personally felt they destroyed one of the most amazing themes to the film with the transition to the stage. Eliminating Mrs. Bank's song "Sister Suffrogette" took away the ne need for "Let's go Fly a Kite" and all the kite symbology in the end. So, instead of ending with that, they had to create something new, which I felt weakened it. The loss of "I Love to Laugh," as well as the introduction of Ms. Andrew (Who in the film was a nice older woman), really displeased me. Casting wise, the loss of Linzi Hateley and Laura Michelle Kelly did not please me at all...I found them to be, on the cast recording, the only ones worth listening too. But, I could be totally wrong, this is entirely conjecture at this stage of the game.

I saw it in London and loved it. I'm really excited to see Gavin Lee again and see how the Broadway cast is.

Posted: 8/3/06 at 11:02amWait a minute...Flahooley wasn't impressed with the London version of the show but is excited about the upcoming Broadway version. Is there any logic to this mode of thinking?

I'd be more excited if it wasn't a show where I knew so much of the music, dialogue and story already. That film is the best one that the Disney studios ever made... bar none.
I wish them well, and I hope it's good and everyone loves it.
But I'd be happier if it was an entirely new take on the Poppins books and characters, and not something that was ALREADY a part of my life before the overture even starts.

I'm excited for it! I think it's one Disney production that I'd really enjoy. I loved the movie, so hopefully it'll be adapted well onstage.

Neddyfrank-
In the film the family is, in effect "broken." The parents are so uninvolved with their children they don't notice when they run off. When Mr. Banks fixes the kite at the end of the film, bringing the four pieces together, it's the restoration of the family as a whole, the addition of Mrs. Banks sash for a tale (A sign of commitment) all is right. If you take out the song, "Sister Suffrogette" and eliminate the minor sub-plot with the mother, then there is no reason for "Let's Go Fly A Kite," to be as powerful a number. Instead it gets weakend and placed at the top of Act 2. Maybe that's just me though.

Posted: 8/3/06 at 12:43pmThat's the exact thought that went through my mind, while I was shifting in my seat, watching this lousy, misguided show. It doesn't hold a candle to the subtle, subtexted beauty of the original film. Nothing about it, is as good, let alone better. There is simply no reason for this show, other than to cash-in on a beloved film title. I wish they had gone for a completely original approach to this show, including a whole new score. I'm insulted that it used those great songs to such inferior effect. The new tunes are horrible.
