Who is the best writer Broadway has ever seen? An what musical or play did they write that made them the best?

Best as in prolific? Probably Neil Simon. Yuck!

Best as in most awards? Probably Terrance McNally (Gag)

Best as in BEST PLAYWRIGHT? With out a doubt Tennesse Williams (Bow down and kiss his feet!)

Love Tenessee. And I wish I liked Terrence McNally's plays more - I find his work too glib. But as as person, I like him rather a lot.

Unanswerable question really.

Simon's probably the most mainstream and successful (not to mention most likely the most heavily produced around the country.)

Williams is probably the most 'important' American playwright.

McNally's the most notable right now.

I still prefer Mamet to all the people I mentioned above. He has more swearing.

Whether it's the book for a musical or a play or a one-act, I'm very fond of the work of Arthur Kopit. I don't know if he's my favorite but I really enjoy his work.

I LOVE what David Ives has written, but in all honesty, I would have to say Tennesse Williams........I do love Arthur Kopit though, his work is very clever and intelligent!!! I love the books for Titanic and Phantom.

I was at an event here in Chicago this weekend...sitting next to Terrance McNally AND Edward Albee. My friends and I were trying to figure out if there were any greater living writers than the two at the next table. We had a hard time coming up with any.

I have always loved Craig Lucas. His plays are so witty and intelligent and really make you question ones own existance. I think my favorite one has to be Blue Window. Although, Reckless was also excellent.
