Klausner was the original matinee Evita, but Opel took over sometime during the first year and then played it for the next two years or so - and was extraordinary.

Phew! Thanks. I'd hate to be losing my mind so soon. :)

Broadway is fickle. Do you guys remember that LuPone was heavily criticized for staying in the role for 2 years.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I've never seen on on B'way, but I remember seeing her perform "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" in the white gown and the blond pullback on the TV, with tears streaming down her face. Devastating!
Anyone know what program that might have been? It was around 1981.

I saw LuPone and Patinkin on Broadway and they were both great in Evita and both deserved the Tony Awards they won that year. I thought that the movie was well done but the performances there were nowhere near as powerful as those on stage. Neither Madonna or Banderas could sing what was originally written for those characters so the score was adjusted for them in the movie. I own both the OBC and the Movie recording and I prefer the Broadway recording.

Does anyone else here love Elaine Paige's Evita? While I love LuPone's interpretation, I find myself having a slight preference for Paige.

How was Terri Klausner? She's from my hometown, but when I finally got to see it, she had already left the show. Patti was out that night and I ended up seeing Nancy Opel. Nancy was very good, but I was really disappointed that Patti was out. It was a Friday night and I had front row seats. Ticket price: $30 at the time which was a lot for someone in high school.

I hate Madonna with a ferocious passion. She's a bitch and she's untalented.... But I loved her in EVITA. I still don't know how she pulled it off.

I agree that Madonna was good in Evita but she can't shine the shoes of LuPone or Paige.

Totally agree with Pab. Lupone and Patinkin were great in Evita. I wish they would both be back on Broadway again.
