I like Blakemore alot as well...admired Moises Kaufman on IAMOW and thought Sullivan did a great job with MORNINGS AT SEVEN.

At one time I would have said FRANK GALATI, but alas...what has he done for me lately?

I generally like Des McAnuff's work.

Bartlet Sher has been doing consistently beautiful work, though I'm not sure if he's the best.

John Doyle takes superb and luscious risks, but again - not the best.

Jack O'Brien does wonders with whatever he gets to wrap his brain around. Probably the best director currently working in New York.

I don't know who I like the most, but I really like Des McAnuff, John Doyle, Jack O'Brien, Susan Stroman, and Mike Nichols.

Jack O'Brien is certainly a versatile guy. His work is always professional and often excellent.
John Doyle is brilliant. I'd love his work without the instrument thing going on. His interpretation of Sondheim's stuff is just incredible.
I loved Bartlet Sher's staging for The Light in the Piazza. He was robbed of a Tony.
I enjoyed Michael Grief's Grey Gardens, but besides that, I haven't liked anything else he's done.
Tommy Tune come back!
Umm...who else? God, I don't know.
John Rando certainly is not one of the best directors working today. He's sort of...bad. I mean, look at Urinetown and look at Nunn's Oklahoma! (which I didn't even care for that much) Who deserved that Tony?

Pal Joey, you're forgeting Hal Prince's original staging of Cabaret!

As a recent New York transplant from Seattle, I've seen probably 10 or 15 productions directed by Bartlet Sher over the years. I've mostly been disappointed. The comment made before about not directing actors well is spot on. Some of Seattle's best talent is virtually indistinguishable from production to production because they're overshadowed by the massive set.

His recent productions of Richard III and Three Sisters for the past two summers were classic cases of this. Also, his productions tend to drag out forever.

Probably Jack O'Brien or Daniel Sullivan.
