I saw the show during it's out-of-town tryout in La Jolla last year, and I just thought it was okay. The music wasn't very memorable, the book was thin, however I thought everyone in the cast, especially Montego Glover, was extremely talented.
But then again, they may have changed things when they moved to Broadway. Although that could be for better or for worse. I mean, Cry Baby was amazing in La Jolla, but they changed it too much for Broadway, and not for the better, in my opinion. Still one of my favorites, though.
