Why not?
That's a good question, though. Why is that? This could turn into a very interesting thread with the following question:
What else could it be called? What would YOU call it if you had the chance to re-name it?
Possibly Bernadetteway, or Chenoway, becasue thats what it's becoming.
Heehee, I love Wicked and Cheno but she can get a little tiresome
Chenoway...I like that, it has a certain ring to it...
ChenowayWorld.com. Whaddya think, guys?
I have to disagree with the mentioning of Bernadetteway. Sure, she's one of the most well-known B-Way (oh, whoops, C-Way) actresses out there, but she's slowly getting pushed out of the picture. Broadway (dammit, I mean Chenoway!) newbies will only know the names Chenowith and Menzel by heart if things keep going.
However, I'll start to panic when it becomes Home Of The Washed Up Pop Stars...which it is slowly becoming.
You have to pay me royalties for that!!! ![]()
Oooh, everyone better remember that I came up with that
I will feel very honored 50 years from now when I'm bouncing my grandkids on my knee and I go, "Hey kids, did I tell you about the time I had a conversation with the person (don't want to make gender assumptions) who named Chenoway?"
And they'll say, "Only a hundred times, Gramma.."
Maybe they should call Off-Broadway Broadway, and call Broadway Off-Broadway! Wouldn't that just screw with everyone's minds? ![]()
There's really no point in doing that, so how about calling Broadway 'SHOWSWITHOVERBLOWNBUDGETSTHATWILLNEVERMAKETHEREMONEYBACKORMAKEROOMFORSMALLERSHOWSTOBESUCCESSFULWAY'. Has a nice ring to it, don't you think? (teehee)
Alright, seriously, how about making the official name 'Whiteway'? Wait, why do they call it the Great White Way anyway? That's another thread entirely...
Thank you for reading my ramblings. It means a lot to me.
I think it was called The Great White Way because of the bright lights of the marquees. I don't know why it's called Broadway. Soon it can turn into disney land with some of the shows out there =D.
When New York was The New Netherlands
and New York City was New Amsterdam
there was a street called Breede Wegh
and then New England took over and changed all the Dutch names

Ah ha! The board is educational! A wonderful history lesson from broadwaystar2b; living, breathing encyclopedia.
It's quarter to eleven. I've been up since 7:30. Please, ignore my punchiness.
I hate to sound like your grandmother, guys, but you are asking very basic history questions -- look it up! There are some truly wonderful books about the history of New York City and Broadway (& other NYC) theatre.
