Well, yeah, I don't think Burton had "no input" - heck, maybe he even spent more time directing Carter's test and made the other women do it in the laundry room in the basement with no lighting -- but its nice to know Carter was Sondheim's pick as well.
Has that Little Night Music been released on DVD yet?
Um, I didn't mean to say that Burton had NO say in the casting; he is the director...
To clarify--EVERY party involved, from producers, studios, etc. ALL agreed that HBC is the right choice for this project.
All Sweeney purists should just wait to hate this project because of her...the music cuts (all SS approved) will kill you!
Yet, the movie will, hopefully, slay us all... Remember, just like any Sondheim piece, it's about the story and characters first.
As for Night Music film, that was a long time ago and Hal was mostly responsible for that. He still owned the project at the time. Burton doesn't "own" Sweeney. He's directing it. And his vision is always interesting...

Well, all I knows is, frontways or backways wigs ain't natural.
BSoBW2 I am soooo in love with you right now...
I don't care if President Bush approved her casting as Mrs. Lovett. That doesn't mean I have to like it!
I still say Tracey Ullman! :)
I was hopin' more for Catherine Tate...
Or if shot in US- Martha Stewart. Now, that's scary.
I am of the Cyndi Lauper school. she would've been quite stunning

Yes. Yes. Yes.
But, look! Life goes on, sadly, but on.

Because I really care about his opinion when it comes to the casting of this movie. You really couldn't think of a better example?

Sondheim himself said "A Little Night Music" was a bad idea as a film, because it was such a presentational, theatrical piece. He also wasn't the demigod then that he has become, so he basically just consigned the project to Harold Prince, whom he considered an equal partner in the stage version. I think almost everyone could have predicted that fiasco.
What I still can't believe (or get over) is that "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", which should have made a fantastic movie, was butchered onscreen in the 1960s by Richard Lester (who wasted a wonderful cast, as well.)
A FUNNY THING... is a Funny Movie,
it's just not a musical.
I like Burton, Depp and Carter a lot, maybe not my first choices, but Burton has used music in some of his movies so I am gonna wait and see before i pass any judgement.
I hope it's dark, scary and musical.
