Why did Brent Spiner leave 1776 before the Tonys in 1997?

I noticed from the performance on the Tonys (on youtube) that Mr. Spiner left the show before the big night. Does anyone know why? I love him in everything and I think he deserved a Tony for his performance.

1776 was originally a limited run at Roundabout. When the show made a commercial transfer, Spiner was unavailable, and replaced by Michael McCormick.

Spiner did transfer with the production to the Gershwin (where I saw him do it), but he left not long after, presumably to do a film role or something.
