Why did the revival of "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" close a few years back???? It won a few Tonys... and all my friends who saw it said it was superb! It closed before I was able to get tickets.... so I'm stuck with the CD....

Because Kristin's fate lay ahead...

HAHAHA! It's hard for me to listen to Kristin as Sally on the CD now, and know that then she was just a cute short little blone girl with a great voice that everyone loved when she won the Tony for YAGMCB.... and now shes the cranky little diva that Wicked turned her into... oh, well... thats showbiz!
It wasn't making money.
It's a small show that wasn't drawing in enough people to support itself in a Broadway house.
So it closed.
I got the YAGMCB CD before I got RENT, and it's so surreal to hear Anthony Rapp cursing! I feel like he IS Charlie Brown. Isn't that terrible?

Kristen's cool. What theater did this play at?

The Ambassador Theatre... where "Chicago" is now...
What makes you think Cheno is a "cranky little diva"

HOW...DARE...YOU????
Cheno is not a....whatever! She is the revival of the Broadway female actor superstar that has been extinct since the death of such personalities as Ethel Merman and Mary Martin.
Second of all, it closed because it only won two Tony Awards. I believe it was Kristin who saw that if they didn't win Best Revival, they would close.
singinswinga, same for me as far as Anthony goes
The producers knew in advance that if it didn't win Best Revival it was going to close. After only Kristin and Roger winning, I actually think that they told the cast the next Tuesday.
Why did it close?
It was a wonderful small off broadway show when it first opened.
The revival over produced this small musical and took away any charm it had. The only thing going for the revival was Kristin and Roger, both who won Tony Awards. The rest of the production was a mess. It was also the gayest YAGMCB I've ever seen. Mr. Rapp, B.D. Wong and the Schroeder were all as nellie as they come.

I can't stand the SCREECHING of Ilana Levine as Lucy on the cast recording.
Besides taking a charming little show and blowing it out of proportion, I also hate the fact that in the revival they "act like children" - B.D. Wong affecting a lisp for Linus, etc. In the original, the actors did not use "little girl" or "little boy" voices.
The revival was lousy. I wanted to slaughter Anthony Rapp at the end of the show. The only two good parts of the show were Chenoweth and Bart, who were rightly rewarded with Tonys.

Several people hit the nail on the head:
It's a small musical that got overproduced and lost in a Broadway house.
The actors were "acting" like children which made the audience cringe.
The music that was added made no sense. It was just inserted so that everyone could have a song, which is not why new material should be inserted. "My New Philosophy", while a cute song, was too modern sounding and didn't fit the rest of the score. "Beethoven Day" was a horrible mess.
And I agree with Jon, Ilana Levine screeched through the part of Lucy. It was painful.
Definitely overproduced. "Beethoven's Day" was NOT what YAGMCB was about! And I DESPISE the way they "jazzed up" the title song!
After it got beat by ANNIE GET YOUR GUN for Best Revival it quickly shuttered. CB and THE CIVIL WAR both posted thei closing notices that Monday night.
"Beethoven Day" is probably my favorite song from the show, and it definitely DOES blend with the new orchestrations of the original numbers. The only argument that one can make about the song being "out of place" in the revival is with regard to the number not fitting Schroeder's character, but, honestly, Schroeder is the least defined character of the group, and it's all about the actor's interpretation. All I have to say is thank God for Andrew Lippa. And Llana Levine's character belt was funny as hell and perfectly suited for the part... not to mention pretty amazing because those notes that she belts are frickin' high. She has the most difficult vocal part in the entire show.

God, I can't take her screaming. I have to skip her songs.

maybe the screaming is unpleasant to your ears, but it is definately in character.

I consider myself very lucky as a child to have seen the original cast in 1968 at the lovely little 80 St. Marks Theatre - no microphones, just a 3 piece orchestra, a set consisting of a few brightly painted "building block" pieces that turned into chairs, benches, a piano, etc. It was magical in it's simplicity - similar to THE FANTASTICKS.

Guess you never heard of Pearl Bailey, Carol Channing, Barbra Streisand, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley or Audra McDonald? Please!
