My personal oppinion is that it wasn't Cerveris that won the tony, but the ROLE that won the tony (same with Menzel in WICKED).
Don't ge me wrong, I loved both of their performances but it was the ROLES that won the tonys.
I still think Sills was one of the best parts of LSOH and I personally liked the revival (it had its flaws but it was fun).
Douglas Sills dropped out of Spamalot because the part he was initially promised began to be re-written and minimalized as the rehearsal process went on. A few months into the process, the part he had signed on to play had dwindled with all the good material going to the leads. Fair enough in my opinion.

The official word was "creative differences." Bottom line though is that Doug is not very funny and wasn't bringing anything to the table. Chris Sieber is naturally very funny and made the part his own. It's great that he's finally cast as something other than the hunky leading man (or a sitcom dad). A huge talent IMHO.
