Why did Jane Eyer close so soon?
#0Why did Jane Eyer close so soon?
Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:04pmSo, I have tried to find an answer but I am having trouble looking in all the posts. What happened to this show? I really love the score and the cast was great! What happened to it? It is much better than lots of the things currently treading the boards!

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:04pmI don't think the title "Jane Eyre" excites the average NYC tourist.

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:05pmYeah, but it is a story many know

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:06pmWell true, but I just think gloom and doom is hard to sell. Nothing to do with the quality of the work, but titles like that have been a hard sell for a while on Broadway.

This is true but it dose have a great story of love pulling through no matter what. Could it have been the religious aspect that turned people away?

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:12pmI know this doesn't really answer your question, but I'm glad there's another person who loves this musical!

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:13pmMe too! Is your icon from the show?

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:16pmYes! I loves me some James Barbour, lol. <33

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:16pmI love it too -- I think "As Good As You" is as good a song as has been written in the past ten years on Broadway. I think part of the problem was that when I came out of the show, and I'm not kidding, my first comment was "Wow, did you see that lighting design???" The lights were incredible -- while the lighting people deserve credit, that's not the first thing you should be noticing...

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:30pmHah, yeah, that's true. I've never seen the show, howver, but I recall reading that it's very long (3 hours, I think?) and dragged on at some parts.

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:31pmi loved this show and still listen to the recording. i actually used it in my english class when we read the book. the beginning of the song where old and young jane are singing together is beautiful.

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:36pm"The Proposal" gets a bit corny, but I do love James Barbour's voice at the end of the song. It's intense and so strong!

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:38pmI read the book this summer, it was a little dragged on at points, but the story is great. I have enver heard any of the score from the musical.

James is so very, very sexy...he definitely was in Jane Eyre, too. The show was good, but it opened the same season as The Producers....that and it was yet another melodramatic pop opera type of thing. The ticket sales were bad, and without Tony wins, it had to close. It's very cute - and I love the end of The Proposal, but hate the beginning of it.
Nothing beats James Barbour in drag speaking in falsetto, though.

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:55pmThat is right I forgot about that. Do you remember how Alanis Morresett(sp?) was the one that paid the bills to keep it open a little longer! I don't like her but she gets a gold sticker from me for that one!

POTO
Le Miz
Ms. Saigon

#18re: Why did Jane Eyer close so soon?
Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:58pmMixed reviews & lousy business. It did not appeal to tourists ( no falling chandeliers or helicopters etc)
#19re: Why did Jane Eyer close so soon?
Posted: 8/21/05 at 6:01pmYeah, I guess it had the problem of the cast and not the set being the main focus
