I'm not going to guess what was in voters' heads when they cast their ballots. I know which show I prefer! I have no idea if touring potential played any role whatsoever in who took home Tony awards.

I cannot find it now, but I did read an article last spring in which a MATILDA producer spoke about the difficulties touring this show. In particular, he brought up the number of children in the cast versus other shows that have toured (specifically ANNIE). The Broadway production of MATILDA employs 16 children at minimum (4 Matildas, 8 regular cast members and 4 swings). By comparison, ANNIE has only 7 children's roles (plus 2 or 3 standbys/swings). Also, some ANNIE tours cut one orphans.

BILLY ELLIOT's numbers are probably about the same as MATILDA's. I don't know if they reduced the size of the children's ensemble for the tour, but I think the financial performance of the BILLY ELLIOT tour was disappointing largely because it was such an expensive show.

A final point: hiring a child for a tour means paying for travel and housing a chaperone as well, an expense the Broadway production doesn't have.

I was a good show, but not deserving of all the awards it got.
