I only bought the cast recording because I am a big BdJ fan, and even though I love "At the Fountain", to me the rest of the score began to sound the same after awhile.
I enjoy the CD a lot more than the actual performance with its original cast. The musical left me feeling ickily weird. I felt the same way after Chitas 'rape' dance in The Rink. It left me more uncomfortable, than entertained. I felt like I wouldn't want to know any of those charactors portrayed on stage.
Sweet Smell of Success, The Rink and Thou Shalt Not were not exactly 'feel good musicals'. I know shows don't have to have that 'feel good' quality, but hopefully they're well made enough to withstand such negativity.
also john lithgow's voice seems lacking compared to on the drs cd (my first listen had me thinking "he won a tony for THIS")
He won a Tony for this over Hunter Foster for URINETOWN.
(I'm not bitter, I promise.)
actually hunter wasn't tony nominated (bastards) however john still did beat out john cullum, gavin creel, john mcmartin, and patrick wilson
Oh I'm well aware that Hunter did not even receive a nomination. John Cullum over Hunter? WHAT!? Especially in the Leading category nonetheless. Hunter was the STAR of URINETOWN.
I don't think it has a thing to do with the story line. It just wasn't any good. I left during intermission.
It's an ugly show....the people, the plot. John Lithgow's character is creepy and vile. There are a few songs that I hear on cable digital Bway channel on demand that I like. The song "Dirt" is not one of them.
I actually liked much of the score ("Dirt" is actually my favorite number in the show), but the book was shaky. Most of the characters came and went without being fleshed out at all, leaving the gifted O'Hara and Noseworthy little to do other than to look pretty and sing a pretty tune. Lithgow was creepy, I guess, but I found nothing remarkable in his performance. I have no idea why he was even nominated other than for his name. I think it was an interesting idea for a show, but the source material needed far more revision and expansion to make it work as a musical. I felt they were only halfway there.
