Just another old comment. When PQ was out of town, it got HORRIBLE reviews. Any common-sensical producer would have closed it THEN. It's like William Goldman's comments re: Golden Rainbow in The Season -- they just kept washing garbage. It had been promoted on Broadway.com (I believe) for almost a year before it even opened out of town. When the harbingers are that daunting, I think the thing to do is let it die as quiet a death as possible and everyone involved move on to other projects. It certainly didn't add any lustre to anybody's resume.
Looking at IBDB for the dates of Mamma Mia your right. But, Branlty still thought of it as a good pick me up type show after the events of 9/11. He thought of it as not great theatre but a good fun show which was what the city needed. Keep in mind that even though ti was only a month after the events it was still felt all around the city.
I really enjoyed the show...I actually saw it 3 times including the final performance. I thought SJB was amazing and it still upsets me that it didnt get nominated for choreography and Spring Awakening did and WON! AHHH! Well anyway in my opinion why it failed was because it wasnt as good as Les Mis. Was it an amazing show that deserved lots of tony's...no but it was a nice show that i belive would have survived in a smaller house and without the pressure of Mel Brooks wanting the Hilton. I think everyone just expected another Les Mis and didnt get it and as long as it was compaired to that it would never succeed.
Well, I know that it failed horribly, but I know alot of people that loved it.

I agree with the choreography and costume upset. That show, despite the controversy over the material, looked absolutely beautiful! The dancing was great too! Not your typical Broadway dances . I enjoyed the show a great deal, however I understand why it closed. With so much to compete with...it didn't really stand a chance. Which is sad, but true
. The cast was awesome as well!
I don't even want to talk about this anymore.
"I think it failed because of the format of the show. Mega sung through musicals aren't as popular as they were in the past. I do think that people have trouble getting used to new mega musicals but do alright with the ones that made a name for themselves. For example, the revival of Les Miserables got people to the Broadhurst because it is Les Miserables. A show people know and love same thing with Phantom. It can get dicy when you add a new show to the mix."
That's laughable to say the least. If the show were good, people would have accepted it and it would still be running. The show was terrible. The music was derivative and the lyrics beyond atrocious. The ONLY thing it had going for it was a strong cast, but even the best cast can't save a sinking ship.
"but even the best cast can't save a sinking ship."
You should change that to 'Crew,' it would be cuter.

the worst piece I saw in 2007.
Pirate Queen.
No treasure to salvage from this wreck in Chicago or NYC.

The issue I had with Pirate Queen was the music was lovely and beautiful. Only problem was I completely forgot about it 5 minutes later. There was just nothing in it that was hummable or stayed on ones mind.
"Mr Roxy...if not everyone shared this opinion then the show would still be playing at the Hilton Theatre now, wouldn't it?"
No, not everyone shared that opinion that it sucked. Sadly it was a minority.
Have you guys noticed that the original poster only posted once? which means...
