The music doesn't seem that bad, the story sounds interesting, so what caused it to fail?

Book problems + huge budget to recoup + large theatre to fill = take your loses and close.
On 7/24/07 a long thread covered this same inquiry:

Because it was so boring that the entire audience almost fell asleep before Act One ended!
Not everyone shares the opinion it ******
because it sucked ..SJB was great but overall the show sucked big..
Mr Roxy...if not everyone shared this opinion then the show would still be playing at the Hilton Theatre now, wouldn't it?
Word-of-mouth is stronger than critics reviews. I think you've heard of some shows not well received by critics: WICKED? MAMMA MIA!?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The only one that matters is yours. You pay your money & you like it greta. Ditto for not liking it
We liked it & you did not. Life goes on.
Why did Follies, probably one of the best ever, fail?
I personally loved the show. That is just my opinion.
Jesus Christ ! this was discussed to exhaustion....
Where have you been?
Now I am becoming bitchy too! only on holidays though
PS. I'll start some threads too ...so I can get some attention! Why did TARZAN close? Why did HIGH FIDELITY close? How does MARY POPPINS fly ?

Oh, leave me out of this!
I never saw it so I can't comment on the show itself, but I got the CR and I thought the music was pretty bad. The cast sounded fine, but the problem was the material itself. It mostly sounded like Les Miz and Miss Saigon thrown together and re-mixed with some Irish flutes added. The lyrics were bland and mostly laughable. It's no coincidence that my favorite songs were the ones with little or no singing (Prologue, Entr'acte, The Wedding).
^^^^ very well said..hon!
Youre lucky you did not see it... unlike me.. I am sucker to every Broadway show....
and let's bury PIRATE QUEEN please.. R.I.P.
Thanks

Mr Roxy...if not everyone shared this opinion then the show would still be playing at the Palace Theatre now, wouldn't it?
Hilton - not Palace.
Because Brooks wanted the theatre for Frankenstine.
I loved the show and think the score is beautiful.
I don't think that the score was a mix of Miss Saigon and Les Miserables put together. If Martin Guirre opened up on broadway people would be saying the same thing.
I think it failed because of the format of the show. Mega sung through musicals aren't as popular as they were in the past. I do think that people have trouble getting used to new mega musicals but do alright with the ones that made a name for themselves. For example, the revival of Les Miserables got people to the Broadhurst because it is Les Miserables. A show people know and love same thing with Phantom. It can get dicy when you add a new show to the mix.
And for the record. Wicked got mixed reviews. And for Mamma Mia. Brantly pretty much said that even though it is not the best show he has seen. It is catchy light harted and funy and he thought it was what the city needed afther 9/11. Keep in mind that it eiather had to delay its opening or had a schduled opening right after 9/11.
MAMMA MIA!'s original preview start date of 10/5/01 and Opening Night of 10/18/01 were never delayed, not even the start date of their 1st rehearsal a few days after 9/11.

Mamma Mia didn't even have a month of rehearsals?
It's Urinetown that was scheduled to open on September 13 and had to delay its opening to September 20... not Mamma Mia.

'Scuse my ignorance...whose photo is that?
The Pirate Queen did not fail because Brooks wanted the theatre for Young Frankenstein. It failed because it got awful reviews and no one wanted to see it.
That photo is none-other that Hollywood's notorious recluse: Greta Garbo.
