that you have a good voice? I mean, I have a sort of quick vibrato myself, but my voice is nowhere near the quality of Babs or Sutton, who both have quite large vibrato (vibrati? O_O?).
What gives this impression?

Posted: 6/30/05 at 4:40pmBecause people have been conditioned to think that way (With Whitney and Mariah and Celine hype). Personally, I find it annoying when used too much.

Posted: 6/30/05 at 4:40pmI've never heard of that assumption. Besides, all you have to do is listen to Jodi Benson or Christine Andreas to know that fast vibratos are NOT good.

I don't really care if it's fast or slow, wide or narrow...as long as it sounds controlled. And it sort of compliments the singer's voice.
One vibrato that I absolutely CANNOT stand is Sarah Brightman's...Jeebus.

Oooh! The Cottonmouth! Can't stand Sarah Brightman's classical and Broadway material. I love her new age recordings.
One singer who's vibrato most despise, but I don't really mind, is Julia Murney. I think it makes her songs really exciting. I love her.

I don't even know what is MEANT by a wide or narrow vibrato, and I have to admit I'm LOST when one says "you could drive a truck through so-and-so's vibrato."
Anyone care to explain?
P.S. I LOVE Murney's vibrato.

"Driving a truck through" generally means that the vibrato is slow...slow enough that you could drive a truck through the gaps before the next one starts.
Lord, I'm tired. Did that make any sense?

You can drive a truck through Frenchie Davis's vibrato - does that help?

heh. I'm also in the "I love Julia Murney" camp. But you know, I have a thing for weird vibratos.

Posted: 6/30/05 at 6:45pmI'm no singer, but I'm sure it's terribly incorrect. I hope he doesn't hurt himself again. But I love how unique and versatile it is... I think that's my favorite thing about him.

Posted: 6/30/05 at 6:49pmSounding like a goat and sounding like any truck can go anywhere near your vibrato are equally terrible. It should sound NATURAL and not forced...or from your throat. That's what should be valued.

Thanks, younger.
Rath, I've never heard Frenchie Davis, lol. But I get it now.
So is wide and narrow the same as slow and fast, or does it refer to some other quality?

Well, fast vibratto tends to be harder to accomplish then neutral or slow vibratto.
For me I prefer fast vibrato like Shoshana Bean's. To me when I hear a fast vibratto it feel liek the sounbd is water flowing over me.
The purpose of vibratto is to change up the sound because it's more interesting that way. So I guess the fast vibratto changes the sound faster and thus makes it moorre interesting.

AKA "The Old Church Lady Warble." Just think of 70 year old Aunt Martha singing "How Great Thou Ar-uh-ar-uh-ar-uh-art"
