Why do people still hire old farts like that?

""Wouldn't Rosie in Birdie be considered a leading female role? She was nominated for the Tony."

The show wasn't built around her nor did she carry it on her own.
***************** "
SO WHAT? Being nominated for THE BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE TONY does not require a role to be built around a certain performer. What matters is how well the actress performs the role, not whether it was written especially for her. Do you think the role of VELMA was written for BEBE NEUWIRTH?? It wasn't but she won a TONY for it anyway and she DIDN'T carry the show on her own! Was ROXIE written for Ann Reinking? No but still she got nominated. Was NORMA DESMOND written for Glenn Close? No it wasn't and wait - she won a TONY for it! So much of your theory...

""She was also a leading lady in The Rink...and won a Tony!"

And shared the stage with some other person called Minnelli

***************** "
So? Even though she shared the stage with Liza doesn't mean she wasn't the leading lady of the show. Or the other one of them.
On stage with Liza or not, Chita still won the Tony for the leading role.
