Muscle should be allowed to form his own opinions of Chita River and Angela Lansbury and consequently you should form your own opinions of him. He is not necessarily wrong in his thinking but neither are you. Just because you disagree doesn't mean he needs to agree with you.
But God himself couldn't save you if you lay a finger on Stephen Sondheim

I WOULD NEVER SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT SONDHEIM...HE IS A GENIOUS. I JUST SPEAK BAD THINGS ABOUT TALENTLESS PEOPLE THAT ARE WORSHIPPED ON THIS BOARD.

But how could you say Chita is talentless?
Have you heard her on the West Side Story, Bye Bye Birdie, Chicago cast recordings? She is killer on those recordings. Have you seen her in the Sweet Charity film? One of the few times we could see Chita perform on the big screen. She was fierce and wonderful as Nickie.

I am an old fart & I speak for old farts everywhere
As far as Chita, she has paid her dues 10 times over & she has more talent in her right toenail than any of her detractors. Another talented old fart Eartha Kitt

Rivera may be talented but she's essentially ghettoized herself into a gay icon over the last few decades. Hers is too brittle, manufactured, and camp a persona to allow for audience identification, which is precisely why she has remained a second-stringer, never has had a show built around her and never made the leap into the big league of leading ladies who carry a show on their own. Sad, but true.

Kiss of the Spider Woman? I'm pretty sure she is classified as a leading lady. I will seriously have Margo kick this threads ass.

She was also a leading lady in The Rink...and won a Tony!

Wouldn't Rosie in Birdie be considered a leading female role? She was nominated for the Tony.

Chita is a legend.
One of the first shows that impacted me was Pippin.
Chita and Ben Vereen captivated me.
(Interview girl adores Chita)
Or was it Rita? Ha ha!

"Kiss of the Spider Woman? I'm pretty sure she is classified as a leading lady"
Casting Rivera in that role at her age was the essence of camp. It would have been much more effective and credible to have someone younger and sexier in the role, like Sonia Braga in the film. Regardless, Rivera was relegated to the sidelines as a featured performer.

The show wasn't built around her nor did she carry it on her own.

"She was also a leading lady in The Rink...and won a Tony!"
And shared the stage with some other person called Minnelli

She won a Tony for Best Actress not Best Featured Actress. The part is supposed to be Camp. She is an actress famous for her camp portrayals in B-Movies.

If you want to get bitchy about it, "brittle, manufactured, and camp" personas could be a charge levelled against probably a good 3/4ths of all the musical theatre performers throughout time. Is that even a bad thing?

I JUST SAID I FELT BAD FOR HER.
I DONT KNOW IF SHE CAN PERFORM ,BECUZ I HAVE NEVER SEEN HER...I JUST SAID SHE HAS BEEN OLD SINCE I WAS BORN.
So.. you insult because you have never seen her. My suggestion is, actually "see" her first "then" make your point. Otherwise you appear more idiotic and unbelievable than ever. And, a word of advice, "TYPING IN CAPITOLS" is not gonna help you either!

What about Yul Brynner ?
The man did 1 role on stage a gallizion times & that was it. He tried something else ( Home Sweet Homer - saw it & it was OK )& it bombed. The point it he is thought of as a theater giant. Why ? I like his work in movies but an icon ? Rivera's career is very varied . The fact that she is still performing @ her age is a testament to her timelessness & talent. She is charming in person & still looks great for her age

I love Chita Rivera. I have loved her as a performer since I was 17 and caught her dancing on a PBS special entitled "Broadway Plays Washington."
The enchantedhunter made several points about Chita's career that hurt me because of how much I enjoy and respect her work. I don't thing she has seperated hersefl out of the mainstream, like enchanted suggests with his "ghettoized" comment. The truth is that a performer like Chita is very rare and at 60 or 70 even rarer still. Maybe her campy sexiness bothers people because of her age? It's what she does and she does it pretty darn well.
I will love Chita till I die but I understand how she may be the cause of uncomfortable feelings in a society(world) that only holds youth and beauty as the ultimate achievements. (personally I see a beautiful woman when I see Chita. Luminous!)
In Kiss she did complain that "I've never been in a show where I spent so much time backstage..." So enchanted has a point about her being relegated to the sidelines.

Edit: I changed the subject line because this "old fart" can only take two pages of that phrase. Thanks to all you young chickies who understand.

I thought Chita was brilliant in "Kiss of the Spiderwoman." It was like watching a master class is performing, by a living Broadway legend none-the-less. Her dancing looked effortless (compared to Vanessa Williams, who I also saw and also thought she was great, but definitely was working on stage).
Living in So. Calif., and often working for the Globe, I can't wait to see her show this fall. I consider myself priviledged that people hire "old farts" like her.

TheEnchantedHunter is a sock puppet of a former poster who also generally had nothing but negative things to say.
Chita is a legend and deservedly so.

Someone mentioned her portrayal of Nickie in the movie Sweet Charity. There is a moment after "I Love To Cry At Weddings" where she tries to confront Oscar about his being "OK" with Charity's past. For someone reason that brief scene with her, John McMartin and Shirley MacLaine just breaks my heart.
