I was talking to my mom about last night (I went to see 110) And she asked me why shows like GG, 110, and BatB are closing?
So I figured i'd post it here and ask....

Grey Gardens is closing because it's not making any money.
110 in the Shade is closing because it was a limited run and Roundabout has another show loading in very soon.
I still have no idea why Beauty and the Beast is closing, considering it's still taking in millions, but Tom Schumaker of Disney never respected that show.

It's like asking "Why do bad things happen to good people?" Bad things happen to all people (or shows), not just the good ones. Things run their course, people lose interest in them.
Besides, how lame would Broadway be if the same shows played for a hundred years and there were never any new ones? The money would stop coming in, because everyone would've seen them already. Although, then Tony Awards would have to make a replacement category, if shows never closed.

Beauty should have never closd. Mermaid should have gone to another theater- there are so many free ones:
Barrymore Theatre-open
Biltmore Theatre-open
Booth Theatre-open
Imperial Theatre-open
Longacre Theatre-open
Lyceum Theatre-open
Richard Rodgers Theatre- Taken
St. James Theatre- Taken for Grinch but then what?!
Vivian Beaumont Theatre- open
MERMAID COULD HAVE EASILY GONE SOMEWHERE ELSE!

All shows close. All shows close. All shows close.
There has never been a show that ran forever. There never will be. Lion King will one day close. Wicked will close. All shows close.

Posted: 7/28/07 at 6:59pmI think it was Beauty and The Beast's time to close after running for so long. It is odd that the TLM had to take that theater out of all the others out there.

It almost always has to do with money. Can't find an audience. Can't get past bad reviews, etc.
Though, if you wish a show to close around here, you hate all actors.
I'm off to hump the cast of Spring Awakening at the stage door.

Posted: 7/28/07 at 7:09pmZeitoujo, get real. There is no way that a show the size of Mermaid would fit into any of those thatres but the St. James. And at the time Beauty was announced as closing in order to open Mermaid there, everyone still thought that Young Frankenstein would be opening there rather than the Grinch. So if Disney wanted Mermaid open, their only option was to clsoe Beauty. It sucks, I hate it. I think they should have just waited until Tarzan closed and then found another theatre next season, but whatever.

Manhattan Theatre Club runs the Biltmore, so only shows that they produce go in there.
Sooo, no Little Mermaid at the Biltmore, haha!

I'd love to see The Little Mermaid at The Booth.
it would force the creative team to be very creative!
