Now here I am to start more uprising...
We get Dharma and Gregg in our town on twice a night. And say what you will Jenna Elfman would have been PERFECT for the role. She was a ballet dancers from the beginning and her comic timing in the show is wonderful. I still laugh at these episodes time and time again.
I just wish they had waited to get her to do the part. She would have been perfect.

Whatchmacallit writes in his (or her) last post that he (or she) didn't want this thread to turn into an anti-Applegate thread yet he (or she) is the first to bash her in the very first post.
Brittany Murphy will probably get her chance again on Broadway again. Just not in this production.

Posted: 5/1/05 at 5:52pmBrittany Murphy would be a fine replacement for Applegate. I'm a big fan of hers, and I feel like the role of Charity is perfect for those flighty hollywood stars that would like to be on stage - it doesn't rely on vocal talent, and the show just really hinges on the audience's sympathy and love for Charity. I'm certain Murphy could do it - there are also a dozen other Hollywood actresses that could do it - but what it really comes down to is money. Unless Murphy and her agent are willing to compromise in that respect, the Weisslers, or any other major broadway producer (especially in a musical) would not be able to pay her what she would need.

Marquise, I DID NOT intend to turn this into an Applegate bashing thread. I didn't assume that by making one critique that counters a lot of people's justification for her playing the part, that I was starting an anti-Applegate thread. If I wanted to bash her, there would be plenty of ammunition, in my opinion, and I would not have stopped with one comment. The rest of my post was in reagards to and in praise of Brittany Murphy.
Yes, my comment was a sarcastic, backhanded comment, but I thought it was funny when I was writing it, and I still think its true.

Posted: 5/1/05 at 10:18pmI am a fan of Murphy. I thought she was great in "Clueless", "Don't Say a Word", and "Sidewalks of New York". On a previous post, I also said that she would be a great Charity.

Wasn't Murphy linked to a Janis Joplin bio-pic a few years ago that eventually fell apart?
I heard she made a demo of an album and her people are shopping it around to see if there's interest (without saying that it's her who's singing).

Well first off -- Brittany Murphy, who might be wonderful as SWEET CHARITY, isn't much of a box office draw. I doubt she would have sold more tickets then Applegate.
Jenna Elfman has everything going for her for the role of Charity except that she is TONE DEAF. As Rebecca Luker quoted in a recent article, she can't sing. A note. There is no way Elfman is going to be doing any singing on Broadway, not after the NINE fiasco.

I think Brittany Murphy would be wonderful, not as perfect as Christina but still, she could do it.
Hey you know who would be another great choice, Dakota Fanning. That girls got a lot of spunk and talent. Although I don't know...is she too young? Hmmmmm
Nancy Kerrigan could take over the role. We'd need to contact Tonya Harding to pay her a visit during one of the rehearsals but hey, I'm sure she'd oblige. Charity on crutches! Oh a girl can dream...sigh.

Posted: 5/3/05 at 7:30pmBeing 'Trained' and Being 'Good' are two different things. Clearly Applegate is trained, she can find her center and she can dance without counting...but 'Good' she ain't. That's clear by watching Janine LaMama run circles around her. Corrine McFadden is a DANCER. Christina Applegate is not. I hope they don't close Charity, because A. It means an amazing ensemble will be out of work, and B. We won't get to see Christina's replacement, who I'm willing to bet will be better.
