what didnt you like? voice? acting? dancing?
i think i saw john go on as link one of the very first times he did it, I really really wanted to see Matt of course, so I was disappointed, but he did a fine job! I wouldnt say he looked comfortable up there, im not sure how much advance notice he had, and he had a totally different sound than Matt but I did enjoy him in the role. Its not easy being an understudy sometimes!
Im not sure if its still on his site but i remember reading him joking about being compared to matt and getting comments at the stage door like "youre not as good a dancer as Matt, but youre a decent singer!"

Posted: 2/21/05 at 12:53amMichael has a very 'real' presense that reads intensely across the footlights. Mr. Hill, for all his beauty and voice, looks and comes across like an A&F model. Not that there's anything wrong with that - as long as all you're looking for is a model. If you want an actor/singer, give me Michael any day.

it was about a year ago, so i don't remember specific details. but i just remember watching his performance and thinking what is the big deal with this guy? i LOVE seeing understudies and replacements. its one of my favorite things in the world. i was very excited that i was seeing someone other then matt (just for the sake of seeing someone new my second time), and i had heard such great things about john. but watching his performance didn't do a THING for me. if i hadn't had known who he was was beforehand, i would have thought who is this guy and why is he in this show?
not to mention the fact that he looked like a 30 year old man seducing a 16 year old. but please understand that im not using that against him. im talking about his performance. it was just one more thing that added to my overall dislike of him in the role.
like i said, i LOVE him on the bare sampler. i LOVE his blog. when people bring up his name i don't say UGH that overrated john hill again? i was just left very underwhelmed with his performance as link. i VERY much look forward to his next project!

Posted: 2/21/05 at 2:02amWhen we saw BARE, I kept checking the program and asking, "This guy was REALLY Hugh's understudy in Boy From Oz?!?!?!?" I just didn't see anything there but a fairly average pretty face and voice.

Posted: 2/21/05 at 2:35amI am completely with you, matthius!! The BARE sampler just doesn't do John justice. So many people have said his voice is ordinary after listening to the sampler. I always thought John was great, but when I heard the rest of BARE, I was absolutely blown away. His "once upon a time" is just amazing and "cross" just sends chills through me with every listen.

The way he sang those two songs was actually what pulled me in, as well. Granted, I'm only going by one particular performance; but I found him very moving on that one.

Posted: 2/21/05 at 6:11amThe start of the song "Bare" is also amazing. Just the way his voice fills the silent theater... it's just heart-breakingly beautiful.

I don't think he's that great.
Michael on the other hand...

btw-
Arden didn't graduate
he left Julliard to do the Big River Tour
he's 22

Posted: 2/21/05 at 11:17amI know John recently left Hairspray, but I'm not sure what he's moving on to. Anyone know? I haven't had the opportunity to hear him sing on his own though.

Jamie Hat said it before I could; Michael left Juilliard to do "Big River" and I believe he turned 22 last October.
As for John, he's a great talent. I'm not going to compare him to Michael, but if you look at him standing alone this guy is amazing. To have been Hugh's understudy is something to be proud of, and if anyone saw his performance in "Bare" you can't help but realize how talented he is.

Posted: 2/22/05 at 12:34pmIf you saw a Link understudy last Summer (2004), it wasn't John Hill, as John left Hairspray with Marissa in August of 2003. Maybe by last Summer you mean 2003, but if not, then you certainly saw Jeff Martin or Serge Kushnier as Link.

Posted: 2/22/05 at 12:53pmJeff Martin is a babe. What a body too- it was the one enjoyable thing about Good Vibrations.

Posted: 2/23/05 at 10:05amI adore John Hill, and I have for almost a year and a half now. I would love to see him in a really comedic leading role because, as we all know, he's uber funny and I don't think he's really gotten a chance to show off that part about him.
