I just saw a poster for the "Kiss Me Kate" movie presented in 3D.
It's been posted on here a bazillion times how all of us want Broadway shows to be available on DVD or whatever.
What if they were shot for IMAX 3D? Would you go? Do you think that would enhance the peculiar medium of a live-to-tape performance?
Thoughts... Has anyone seen the “new” 3D? I've seen a few films presented in 3D none very successful. Maybe it’s an answer.

Kiss Me Kate was one of the (if not THE) last films shot in 3D. The genre was coming to a close and it wasn't very successful.
little shop!
I'm talking about the actual show not the films.
Kiss Me Kate might have come at the end of the 1950s 3D film craze, but it was hardly the last film shot in 3D. Imax 3D films have been a small but successful genre for years. Many recent computer animated films have been successfully presented in Imax 3D, including "Monster House" and "The Ant Bully". "The Nightmare Before Christmas" was converted to 3D and released last year. George Lucas is reportedly planning on rereleasing the Star Wars movies converted to 3D. This is hardly a dead, irrelevant format.
A few years ago I saw an Imax 3D film set in Manhattan that included a few minutes of a Broadway musical, "She Loves Me" if I'm not mistaken. It was very effective watching the staging and dancing in 3D. I would love to see current shows preserved in High Definition 3D, and would donate a 3D video system to the Lincoln Center archive if I had the resources. 3D would be an effective way to present recorded Broadway shows in movie theaters, but unfortunately neither the producers or the performing unions seem to grasp the concept of synergy in the age of digital media. As far as I can tell the producers are terrified of losing even one ticket sale because a show is available in another medium, and the performing unions are still fixated on the dangers of those new fangled phonograph recordings and all the Moog synthesizers that might replace musicians.
Tech - You nailed it. I've seen those films and one done about the Titanic from James Cameron. Cameron is a big proponent of developing all future films in 3D and changing the landscape of the theater market as people increasingly just rent and download.
It’s not the same old 3D, and it’s only going to get better. I think for theatre it would be an exciting chance to really expand an audience.
I would love to see the Lion King done this way or even Jersey Boys.

How interesting that would be. Maybe they could have a shot were Seymour's feeding the plant, and it's in the perspective of Audrey II and he either shoving or throwing the body parts in there. That and the plant coming out at the end.
I think it would be a very interesting thing to do. Just imagine, during Sherry or any song in Jersey Boys, the guitars that Christian and Bobby are playing could come right at you.

um...huh?
I can't think of anything more exciting than a guitar coming right at me.
I saw Kiss Me Kate in 3 D @ a 3D film festival years ago
It was so much better in 3 D . The added depth really helped. It was, I believe , the only mian stream Broadway musical shot in the process in the 50's . See it in 3 D if the opportunity ever permits.
Actually, my school just bought a projection system that has motion capture, digital projection, and 3-D. We'll be introducting the technology with our upcomming production of Dr. Faustus where certain characters will be computer generated and shown in 3-D.

When you say "3D" do you mean with true stereoscopic depth? As far as I know this would require either colored glasses for anaglyph viewing or polarized glasses and a silver screen. Will your audiences be wearing glasses to see these 3D projections?
Unfortunately the computer industry has hijacked the term 3D to refer to any graphic that shows perspective.
