I saw Wicked for the 3rd time last night, and it was even more amazing. I had bought partial view seats, and was in Row EE seats 10 and 12, which are teh 3rd and 4th off the aisle. I was weary of how the view would be obstructed...not a thing was obstructed. When Kristin entered, she got a HUGE round of applause, considering it's her last week and all. After "No One Mournes The Wicked" the audience went WILD. There was about 2-3 minutes of applause, and Kristin kept on laughing and making these gestures as to how long the audience kept on applauding. When Idina entered, the audience once again went wild. Her "Wizard and I" was as strong as ever, as were her other songs. Sean McCourt was great as the Wizard...he worked with the little he had, and made more out of it. Also, he convinced you that the Wizard is supposed to be evil. "Defying Gravity" brought down the house, and Idina was amazing. During intermission, I kept on eharing everyone around me saying, "How did this lose best musical to Avenue Q?" Anyway, the second act begins, and everything is just great as always. When Idina sings "No Good Deed", everyone was in awe. During "For Good" there was even more chemistry between Kristin and Idina,a nd it was niced to see. At curtain call, everyone in the theater rose to give the entire cast a standing ovation. One thing that also stuck out more to me was the ensemble members eenrgy throughout the show. They definitely stuck out more than ever. I especially liekd being in the 4th row; because I was so close, and could appreciate the costumes.
**Hint- During "Dancing Through Life" there are two guys in dresses**

Kicks--thanx so much for the review! it's one of the only ways i can live it--being on the west coast can really stick sometimes. sounds like you had an incredible time. you know, the reason they were so energized was probably due mostly to the audience. when you get energy from the audience, you can do anything. Elphie, i hope you have a wonderful time on Saturday/Sunday. make sure to give us a report!

I saw the show this past Friday night and had a similar experience. To sum up: I thought that Randy Harrison overall as Boq was weak acting wise, missed a LOT of the jokes and comic timing. Didn't come across at all as desperately in love with Galinda, and at times seemed just a little effeminate. His singing voice was okay, though...and just that...okay. I never thought I would say this, but I REALLY missed Christopher Fitzgerald in the role. Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,
The Balladeer

Posted: 7/14/04 at 5:21pmyeah, chris did the funniest thing when i went to see the show for the second time. before he started to talk to galinda during 'dancing through life' he started to squirm around and started to freak out. it was SOOO funny and the audience was cracking up! kristin looked so confused, but then she turned around and got it.

My thoughts on Randy are very similar to everyone else's. He sang very well, maybe better than Christopher from what I heard. His acting left something to be desired though. I attribute the effectiveness of an actor to what I think the actor was trying to relay, and if it was effective to my feelings. Christopher used the sweet and lovesick approach and incorporated that into lines such as "It's Boq" and "...just one dance, I'll be waiting here all night." I felt so bad for Boq during those, I felt he was genuinely in love with Glinda and I felt even more for his character during the second act when the whole Wicked Witch of the East incident happens. Randy came across as being pissed off whenever Glinda mispronounced his name, and he seemed more "informative" when he was telling her about being there "all night." I didn't really feel bad for Randy's Boq at all. In the second act during "Wicked Witch of the East" I just felt like he was going to get Glinda, while Christopher was happy that he may have a chance and will finally be able to persue Glinda.
Main Points:
Singing: Both great, very surprised with Randy.
Acting: Christopher surpassed Randy by far.
and for a slightly less important view...
Looks:
they're both very easy on the eyes

Posted: 7/14/04 at 5:36pmYou can usually only get lottery or full-priced cancellation the day of the show for Wicked. This weekend there were still some partial views left for the weekend of 8/15 (I have tickets for row BB, ie. front row). When is Christopher coming back, btw?

Posted: 7/14/04 at 6:13pmI'm seeing J-La on the 11th of August. Is anyone else going to be there? The matinee is when I'm going. I will be very heartbroken when Kristen leaves, but am totally excited to see a new Glinda. (Although, I did see Laura Bell do Act II)

Randy Harrison is such a cutie, but I can't imagine him being a lovestricken, kinda nerdy guy. I'm seeing it with him this Sunday... I know he can sing well, acting wise I haven't heard great things but w/e... I know he can do some other things though (has anyone here seen "Queer as Folk", lol?).
I agree that JLT has very big shoes to fill... Cheno seems irreplaceable to me, but I guess I'll have to be open-minded, 'cuz obviously no one can stay in a show forever.

Posted: 7/14/04 at 7:42pmI've watched "Queer As Folk", and I must say, I've never wanted any character anywhere to die more horrifically than I want Randy Harrison's character to. He is just so annoying, which maybe his character is supposed to be, but his acting does nothing to improve his standing with me ever. I was horribly distraught to hear he was going to be in "Wicked". What horrible performer for such a great show! (Thus ends my Randy Harrison rant).

Posted: 7/14/04 at 8:03pmI love the character of Boq. I think it is the one that I am most like. The quiet, shy kind of guy who admires from afar, and finally becomes annoying when the confrontation occurs. I love it!

I cannot WAIT for Jennifer Laura Thompson to step in and fortunately I'll get to see her on August 7th!
If you listen to her in Urinetown especially, you know she definitely has the pipes in both belting and legit. I think she'll put in her own spin to the character of G(a)linda. That is what is exciting about theatre, yes? People don't have to fit cardboard cutouts of how characters are "supposed" to be and how they are "supposed" to act.
As long as the motivation is there and it seems appropriate, right?

Posted: 7/14/04 at 10:08pmAgreed Paul, I was so excited to see Eden as Elphaba and Randy as Boq last time I went. It's so much fun to see a different take on a role. I'll have to see Jennifer in the role, that'll be interesting to see a different take on Glinda other than Cheno's. It's great to see the little traits that Cheno created, but I'll be excited to see the new ones Jennifer creates. Replacements always get me excited to see the show again.

"$55 from ticketmaster about 4 months in advance" Ahhhh I want to see WICKED again so bad but I hear tickets are sold out for a while and the lottery is crazy!
"god! that's a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time. i can barely wait 1 month to see a show! " lol!

Posted: 7/15/04 at 10:17amI just bought partial view seats for $55 on ticketmaster also. For August 12,Row E seats 23 and 25. Those are farther out then EE but do you think I'll still see everything like you did? I saw Wicked last month but Idina was out. Kristen was fantastic and so was Eden that day. However my seats were row V center orchestra which is 25 rows back and although I could see everything I missed alot of facial expressions which I'm dying to see.
