Wicked Song Question (maybe spoilers?)

For those of you who haven't seen the show Wicked (I haven't either)and don't want to have things ruined...don't read the responses to this. However, in the song "No One Mourns the Wicked" who sings the part "Have another drink of green elixer..." etc. Who is this person and why are they giving the drink the Elphaba. Also, if Joel Grey is supposed to be her father (as I have read online), why does Sean McCourt (who is so much taller and different looking) play "Witches Father". thanks

Okay.

The Wizard is her father. Melena (her mother) had a husband, Frex (Sean McCourt) and Frex and everyone else thinks it's his babies. But Melena likes to have sex with various traveling salesmen. The Wizard gives the drink to Elphaba's mother.

I hope I'm not going to spoil this for you, but here goes. Elphaba's and Nessarose's mother was not faithful to her husband, the mayor (or gov.) of Munchkinland. She had an affair, and the man she had an affair with is the one singing "Have another drink, my dark eyed beauty..." in a "re-cap," if you will, of Elphaba's birth/early childhood. The book goes into this much, much further than the play. Anyway, you don't find out until the end of the show that the man the Witches' mother had an affair with, ends up becoming the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I hope this clears some stuff up for you, w/o giving too, too much away!

The character of the Wizard is the "have another drink" man, but the actor currently playing Fiyero goes onstage and lip syncs to the pre-recorded voice of the Wizard. So he's sort of...the young Wizard.

wouldn't that suggest that Fiyero is the young wizard..aka elphaba's father..then she falls in love with him. so she falls in love with her dad? hmmm

I don't think you understand. The actor playing Fiyero plays two parts - Fiyero, and the young Wizard. Fiyero the character is not the young Wizard. I think you're taking this a little too far.

Taye Diggs did NOT play the Young Wiz. when he was in the show...I saw it 3 times with him and once from the front row. I guess it would have been a little weird since he is black and the wizard isnt.
