Wicked - Why so long to reach Broadway?

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but doesn't the amount of time between Wicked's out-of-town tryout ending June 29 in San Francisco and it's Broadway opening preview not until early October seem rather lengthy? I keep thinking maybe they're playing another city but I can't find any reference to this.
What will Wicked be doing in July, August, and September besides moving the set?

4 mos. from the first apperance? that's not long for a show, to me. Remember the show is about 3 hrs. long, if I'm not mistaken. So I would think they'll be working to trim that down a bit in addition to making some improvements.
I hope it does well. I think this may be just what Broadway neeeds. I hear they may be planning a Haloween hyped opening.
Stephen is creative marvel and deserves to be here.

And let's remember that the October opening is a projected date. If after the SF run the producers want to do additional work, it could open much later.
A new musical takes time to create. Let's be thankful one has got this far.

Posted: 6/11/03 at 11:06pmI used to live in Detroit......saw a production of Camelot there with Robert Goulet as Arthur......and through the whole thing my mind kept screaming 'NO, NO, NO!', as I had seen him on Broadway as Lancelot, and here seemingly hundreds of years later, he's playing Arthur.......
