I attended the WNBA game in Connecticut on Friday 8/1/25 and was pleasantly surprised to find a ton of Wicked sponsored marketing. I had no idea of this planned marketing event when I entered the arena. I have to say that I thought all of the graphics and activities worked well and I walked away thinking that this partnership was done well and it was great advertising. Honestly, I almost enjoyed it more than the game since the NY Liberty lost.
Here’s a list of what I experienced:
Received a packet of bracelets on entry into stadium. Again I had no idea what it was until much later when I realized they were friendship bracelets, one green, one pink each with a half silver heart magnet that made a whole heart when connected. Very cute. They also added a tiny Connecticut Sun tag.
They had really nice Wicked banner electronic ads that would flash and go on during the game.
Between the first and second quarter, they played “Name that Showtune” and selected someone who was enthusiastically dressed with a fur coat and tiara. He answered all the questions correctly and won tickets and transportation to see Wicked on Broadway. It was fun to hear about 4 showtune snippets blasting across the arena, two of which were of course from Wicked.
At half time they had Annika Wooten come out and set up a big canvas. They started playing Defying Gravity and she started painting while mouthing some of the lyrics. It was great fun because you sit in anticipation trying to figure out what the painting will be. This is hard to grasp because she is painting it upside down which allows her to have a grand finale moment reveal.
I got there five minutes before start time so I was sorry to learn that I had missed Christine Dwyer sing the national anthem.
Great fun and thoughtful approach to garnering sales and eyeballs for the movie.

I guess after the successful Back to the future partnership with the ny jets, this is the new trend. It’s interesting that wicked feels the need to do this now. Their sales have been up since the film, no? They’re getting a lot of free marketing, why now?
