Wicked appreciation thread

I admit that I really love Wicked. I honestly think it is an extremely well crafted musical that is also enjoyable. Everyone I know (and on here) honestly thinks it is a piece of crap show that it is very overrated, while I believe it is underrated. The book is very smart, and while Glinda and Fieyro both start off as stock characters, grow into much more. The show also has one of my favorite scores. It is intergrated, tuneful, and completely original. The show deserves much more credit than it really gets. And what peeves me the most is the fact that the same people that dismiss Wicked declare Bonnie and Clyde and Big Fish to be modern masterpieces with gorgeous scores and wondrous books. Is Wicked perfect? No. It has it's flaws, but is still miles above other contemporary shows. Is Wicked better than Grey Gardens or The Bridges of Madison County? I believe so. Others may not agree but it's just my honest opinion, and maybe it really is.

It has done extremely well internationally, but many critics and theatre enthusiasts often say it is an atrocity. I consider there to be 2 types of underrated musicals. The unknown/forgotten gems (Violet, Grey Gardens, Light in the Piazza) and then there are the current/old hits that never got a fair chance from the reviewers. That's where Wicked comes in. Many people said a Wicked was awful, to the point where one person said it would never make it to Broadway. I feel that the success it has gotten is deserved, but has still not achieved getting appreciation from people other than tourists.

It has gotten International acclaim. It seems, with all it's faults, hits a nerve.

It's what a lot of tourists are looking for in a Broadway show... a somewhat familiar story, big spectacle, and something family friendly. Plus the fact that it is derived from one of the most beloved family film classics of all time doesn't hurt. I personally think the book and score leave a hell of a lot to be desired. It's an entertaining evening, for sure, but the whole thing has always felt like a candy coated theme park show to me. Some moments of greatness and true potential, but mostly a disjointed and somewhat trite piece of theatre.
It's hard to believe that something so airy and colorful came from such a dark novel. I am a HUGE fan of the novel and consider it a contemporary literary masterpiece.

I agree with bwayphreak234. It's an entertaining "candy coated theme park show."
I can't get over Schwartz's awful lyrics. Who can forget this repetitive gem:
"And goodness knows, the wicked's lives are lonely. Goodness knows, the wicked die alone. It just shows when you're wicked you're left only on your own."

So you started an "appreciation" thread, but decided to just bash those that don't agree with you.

To heck with international acclaim, It's been running for over TEN years. It's constantly on tour and sells out in BOTH places. I'm not sure how much more APPRECIATED it could be.

So WHAT if critics didn't like it? So WHAT if others here don't like it? Do you think you are going to change people's minds? How does that affect YOU?

We all have shows that "others" didn't like. SO WHAT?

I love Wicked also. It is an international blockbuster. It is definitely plenty appreciated. I wouldn't take it so personally whether some anonymous people on a message board like a show as much you do. People can like or dislike whatever they want.
