Wicked into a movie?

Someone told me last night that Wicked was in talks to be made into a movie. I was surprised, since I would think that a movie version wouldn't be made until all the hype has died way down. Has anyone else heard about this?

I heard that Gregory Maguire wrote this book about how the Wicked Witch of the West became so mean, and they were going to write a musical based on it. Why would they do that? Have they even READ the book? I just don't see that making a good musical at all!

So I'll try to give a legit answer.

Yes, Wicked is in the very basic ground stages of becoming a movie. Which isn't really a surprise since it's such a blockbuster, recent movie musicals like Hairspray and Mamma Mia have been really successful, and Universal owns the rights. Contrary to some other sources, I believe Stephen Schwartz has said it won't be out for quite a while, probably at least 5 years.
