so many productions opened now and a few in the works....

-Broadway
-National Tour
-Chicago
-London
-Los Angeles
-Japan (2 in Asia)
-Osaka (Universal Studio 30 min preview)
-Tokyo (full sit-down production)
-Stuttgart, Germany
-Melbourne, Australia


I love WICKED..but 9 productions running at the same time

Phantom had more at once at one point. :P to Wicked.

In the early 90s:

4 US Productions
2 Canadian Productions
2 UK Productions
1 German Production
Several in Japan
1 Australia

The list goes on!

Les Mis expanded much faster than Wicked. I don't have my Edward Behr companion book with me, but I'm pretty sure that there was a least 3/4 of a page devoted to a list of all current (as of 1987) and upcoming productions.

I think so. I think it's just that half the population of BWW was still entering cognitive thought (and perhaps bladder control) at the time of Les Miz's world domination, so they don't have that perspective.

Well, as has been stated before, the success in America is largely due to the success of the Oz movie. I think the international success just piggybacks off the American success. It's pretty common in Japan for quirky or sometimes mainstream American things to become popular, which is why it doesn't surprise me that they have several productions going. As for the West End, a transfer just made sense.

I don't think you guys are aware of how global The Wizard of Oz is.

It may still hold the world's record as the most recognizable film of all time.

Now that home video, the Internet, and cable TV have entered into the equation, I'm not so sure anymore.

But it held the title as worldwide champ for over half a century.

B12, that's right...anyone ever hear of "Der Hexen von Oz" (or whatever the title may be, there seems to be different translations)?

Despite the record being possibly broken, it is still very well recognized.

Worse things could happen. IN MY LIFE could have taken over the world. :)

I'm happy for Stephen Schwartz. I hope he's making lots and lots of money. But now it's time for him to get off his duff and write ANOTHER Broaday show!

It was not uncommon 20-30 years ago for multiple productions of shows to be playing around the world. I believe at one time, there were about 12-15 proudctions of Godspell worldwide (NYC, LA, San Fran, DC, 7-8 road companies, London, Paris, Sydney). Hair and Cats also come to mind as shows that spread like wildfire.

You know I think you really diminish Wicked's success by saying "Oh, it's because people really love WIzard of Oz!" There have been lots of other Oz-Themed projects and they had no where near the success. People can hate it, but something really strikes a chord about this show.

I'm not referring to community theatre either.
At one time, shows like Godspell and Hair had 8-10 bus and truck companies combing the country.
