For those of you who read the novel, did you like it better than the show, or the show better than the book? I've only read the book, but I know most of the show's surprises and I know all of the music.
They are too different to compare. Most ppl will say the book.
I think the show is more of a family thing - I wouldn't want my 10 yo sister reading the book!
i like the story in the show better. i like the whole fiyero and boq thing better, but i found Liir to be a pretty interesting turn of events in the book. I'll decide when I see the show in December.

I've read the novel twice and listened to the recording...erm...a bunch of times. Actually, I think the show's better than the book. Makes more sense, it flows better, and it's not as rushed as the book was.
Which is saying a lot coming from me. I HATE adaptions 90% of the time, mostly when I've read the book. Of course, Les Miz and Phantom are also a lot a better than their original novels, if you ask me.
They are so completely different, the musical should have had a different title. It's a bit misleading. The musical is cute and fun, but it's story is much less interesting and involved as the novel. It basically took the main device of the novel and touched on a couple of events, but is really an entirely new story. I've read the novel twice, but I doubt I would go see the musical again unless I was going with friends who had never seen it who buy my ticket.
I liked the story better in the book, but I'd rather go see the show again than read the book.

The book has a better story, but the musical clearly has the better music lol (yes, jk).
Basically, an effective way to compare the two is to say which would make a better film: the book or musical. Without a doubt, its the book. However, a movie about the musical would be far more popular, as the book is very dark and, shall we say sexually charged.
Oops

don't look 'em....

That's not a good way to compare them!
The show was made for the stage! The book was made for reading!
Plus, Fox Family would never air a movie based on the book - but they would air a movie based on the show!
Likewise, the book as a movie would probably rated R (or NC-17) if it was directly made into a movie while Wicked (the show) would be rated (P)G(-13).
I agree that the story as it is in the show would make a more popular movie (haha, 'Popular'!) but I like the darkness of the book and would probably like the musical a lot better if it had stuck closer to the original story. I like dark musicals :)

I LOVED the novel, probably more than I liked the musical...
But the musical was good. I loved how the ways that they did change the characters and the story. And made it funny.
I think the musical is wonderful...the music...everything..BUT the novel has more depth to it. I agree with the "dark" part, I think the musical is just so very american..broadwayish if you know what I mean. It doesn't quite show Elphaba's character as much as the book does.
I love both-can't decide!
I got you fiyeros_elphaba
Alix,
Obvioulsy you like dark musicals (Cabaret). So do I - like Les Mis, Cabaret, Dracula, NOT POTO (but oh well)
Cabaret was great! I dunno if it was because Adam was there or not, but I think it was just great without him.
yup, dark musicals are the best :) my personal faves are CABARET (duh), RENT, ASSASSINS, and TABOO.

the two should be concidered two different entities. They are so different that they are not even comparable. I liked the musical for the music and peppiness, but the novel was more developed. Over all, i liked the musical more. The book creeped me out a bit.
Book-it's so much deeper and more complex.
I missed Assassins
And Alan Cumming was BY FAR superior to Adam Pascal...No competition
(But I do love Adam)
i like things about both..i like how the book is darker but i like how the friendship grows in the musical better with elphaba and glinda. there both really good and alot different so you should read and watch both!
musicalfan, i love your signiture. moulin rouge is amazing!
Lyte - I don't think that her icon is from Moulin Rouge (but rather The Shining)
i wasn't talking about the picture. the quote underneath is moulin rouge. it's part of come what may.
