Adamized --
Likewise, Fiyero would never idolize a naked Elphaba in the moonlight in the Broadway musical...

Posted: 11/3/04 at 1:02amI read the book before the show came out and loved it. The show to me is not the same thing at all and I was really confused when I had friends talk about how much it was like the book. The show is fun and appeals to the families, but the book does not. I wonder how many parents have bought the book at the merchandise booths planning to read it to their children and then are totally shocked.

The book is fabulous.
The musical is just great as well.
They're very different, and working through two different mediums-- I don't think that the two can be compared. I loved both :) And suggest both, whichever you may ahve done first.

I bought the music and fell in love with the soundtrack. since I live in Los Angeles, going out and seeing the musical right away wasn't an option. So I bought the book and started to read.... I found the first two chapters so hard to get through that I stopped reading it.
Then I saw the musical. WOW! After listening to the CD for, what, three months straight, I was surprised at the ending, the plot twists and turns--the soundtrack SO captures your attention without giving the story away. I totally fell MORE in love with the musical than I thought I could. Plus, Idina was amazing. As was Jennifer Laura Thompson. A woman sitting next to me at the show told me that the first two chapters were weird, but if you push through, it was a you-can't-put me down book. I went back and read the book.
She was right.
I LOVED the book, the book and show are so different, BUT, what amazed me more is HOW someone could come out with such a great story book version for the musical from such a dark book. I very much liked the focus on Glinda and Elphie, especially since Glinda isn't in the book as much. I liked the happier ending for the musical, because who wants to see a musical that's got too much of a depressing ending, you know?
So that's my two cents. I liked both, but I like the musical better. I'd read the book again too though!

Yeah, definitely not a dark musical.
The one thing that bothered me about the book was not the first two chapters, but rather whenever there was a part-break, and you halfway had to figure out what happened.
Both book and musical are so very quoteable, which is neat. Even if in different ways.

She was dead, dead and gone, and all that was left of her was the carapace of her reputation for malice.
"And there the wicked old witch stayed for a good long time"
"And did she ever come out?"
"Not yet."
Now, THERE's a way to end a story. Imagine that as the ending in the context of the musical...It's better already. Just one of the many elements I think the creators of the musical should've considered while writing it. There are a few elemenst to the musical I prefer, but I think the musical would've been much more effective if it was a darker story.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 8:54pmOh, the book is AMAZING, but, it really is a very adult novel, and the show is very much created for a "family" audience. That isn't really a bad thing persay, but, they really are two different animals and if one goes to see WICKED with the expectation of seeing the book on stage, they will be VERY dissapointed. I think the show could have been deeper, but, as it is now, it's just fun, harmless fluff with catchy music. I think some shows take themselves too seriously, and there's nothing wrong with a light-hearted show once in a while!

Posted: 11/4/04 at 9:31pmI read the book and listened to the music before going to see the show so i was very throw off when i saw the show. I was expecting a dark, evil, and crazy musical when it was very humorous. But i enjoyed both, on different levels.

yes, i agree. this a apples and oranges thing.
both fruit, but they are very different.
i like them both so much. wicked is my favorite book of alltime, i read it two years before the musical came out.
and have read it since.
that being said, it is not my faveorite musical ever, it has its flaws and it up's.
both are good, great even
however, the book outshines the musical.

Posted: 11/5/04 at 4:38amI wish that Fiyero would have looked a little different. From the book's discription and the pix i thought that he would have. But that's okay by me cause now i have a thing for Norbert Butz!
