Heres a picture of it.
Its legal
Also they added many things such as cutting out the dance at the end of wonderful, also the last scene were the wizard gets taken away and as well with Madame M... they now have it next to the clock istead of the black screen and they have a re-anctement of the meeting of "the younger wizard and the wife" behind it. Im trying to think if they did anything else.

I liked the surrealist hat. I always have. It started everything off with a stylized approach, just like Elphaba's surrealist cape extending outward during the end of Act I. Why cut one without the other? Why start picking away and "dumbing down" the initial artistic vision?
I also agree that the (wonderful) fundamental set design communicates (to me) that the show is taking place INSIDE the giant Clock Dragon's mechanisms mentioned in the book. It was a brilliant, theatrical touch to present it that way.
Perhaps these creative decisions to modify it and remove things at this late date are being made by "eyes" that are too easily bored and have seen the show way too many times.
Step away, leave it alone... and quick "picking at it!" The (Tony-winning) set design is one of the best aspects of this show.

I miss the original costumes that they changed in 2005. I miss the Wonderful dance even though it did nothing for the plot. I hate new the Elphaba/Fiyero scene before Dancing Through Life. However, I much prefer the green hologram instead of the giant hat in the beginning.

Posted: 10/26/07 at 4:04amWhen I saw the broadway show in June I thought the Witches hat was going to be in it.. and when it wasn't.. I wasn't too upset.. I actually forgot about til I saw this thread.. (And I'm a Wicked Fanatic) But I did love the new Fiyero and Elphie scene before dancing thru life.. Julia Played that scene so well.. I just had to love it.. I saw the LA cast in August,, and I was not a big fan of the dancing though Life in the show.. Is that the same dance in Broadway?? Or are theu different?? BTW I life the hologram.. I get the chills everytime I see it..

Posted: 10/26/07 at 4:49amThere is a good reason for the loosing of the hat, it cause great problems, on many occasions it would get stuck in the trap door or the trap door would close leaving some of the hat on stage, obviously they managed to sort this out but it cause great difficulty to the stage hands who were trying to sort it out! as originally they were gonna have the Hat in london, but then decided against it, and the over changes are just to their popularity in the London production, and the whole thing about the wizard reappeasring with the mother at the end is due to us britons being idiots and some not understanding the ending and they thought it might make it cleare in other productions as well, hope that helped!
