I saw Melbourne's production of WICKED last week. It was fantastic.
My partner noticed that Elpheba said, "You think HURRICANES just appear out of the blue?" I Googled the script and on http://denwaichi.tripod.com/wicked.html, the line is "You think CYCLONES just appear out of the blue?". Now, in THE WIZARD OF OZ, wasn't Dorothy brought to Oz via a TORNADO? You can't get hurricanes or cyclones in Kansas. What's going on?

I don't know why she said Hurricanes, that could've just been a slip up.
But Cyclones and Tornadoes are basically the same thing, aren't they?
I don't think so. I believe cyclones come off from the ocean, don't they?
She used the word Hurricanes on opening night as well.

Did you love the Melbourne production as much as I did? I saw the matinee preview on the Wednesday before the show officially opened, and we got the Stand By rather than the lead for Elpheba. But she was SO good, I now need to see the lead to see how much better she is. I bought an OZ crystal for my Christmas tree, as well as a poster, and I unsubtley told my partner I'd like the both snow globes for Christmas.
Technically, cyclones are just another name for a Hurricane (or Tropical Cyclone)
Hurricanes form over large bodies of warm water...
Amanda used the word Cyclone on the audio from the first preview on the 27th June.
KryptoniteKid,
Having only listened to the bland and very boring OBC recording, i went in thinking i would not like the show. Opening night was amazing the show as a whole was very entertaining, the two girls where great ( Lucy had some vocal issues )and the end of Act one was thrilling theatre.
The surprise of the night was Rob Mills and he was most likely the perfect person for the part. Callea who i have never been a fan of and still are not, was cast for name alone.
Maggie, Rodney and Rob filled out what really was a great cast. All in all a fun night out at the theatre.

I think the bigger issue is that Elpheba said it instead of Elphaba...
I would have to watch the movie again, but I'm pretty sure they say cyclone in TWoO.
Elphaba. E-L-P-H-A-B-A. Elphaba.
I'm just waiting for someone to turn up here with a username that is a misspelling of Elphaba. I promise you this, I will rib them mercilessly from dawn until dusk when I see them.

Wow, you think the OBC is boring? I love it. I'll have your copy thanks :) I didn't get to see the show with Anthony C or Amanda H, so it's a good excuse to go back. I thought Maggie K was great.

Ok, in America, Cyclone and Tornado are synonymous. In the original Baum book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" it is referred to as a cyclone.
I don't know why they changed it to hurricane though, unless they felt it would make more sense to an Australian audience...even though there are no such things as hurricanes in Kansas...
There are various technical variations of cyclones, and sometimes tornadoes are (incorrectly) called cyclones. In the olden days -- many people called tornadoes cyclones. Auntie Em and Uncle Henry were not trained meteorologists. They called them cyclones. So sue them.
OY!
The writers of WICKED did NOT have the permission from the movie studio to adapt the FILM.
They could only adapt the BOOK.
That's why there is no "Toto," because that was only in the film.
Glinda says "Dodo" in WICKED, Elphaba says "Hurricane" instead of "Tornado," and so forth.
Um, I believe they use the words cyclone in the film of THE WIZARD OF OZ.
And Toto was in the book. They could have used that, but they put a joke there.
Eh, not so funny WBAF. Good try though
I'm only repeating what Stephen Schwartz said in an interview.
I wasn't trying to be funny.
I'll see if I can dig up the interview.
I don't give two hecks about WICKED. I have no reason to make this schlock up.
KryptoniteKid,
I think the OBC recording is with out a doubt one of the worst ever and if you would like it i would be more than happy to give it too you. Maybe if i had seen that cast live, it might be a different story.
I always thought that during No Good Deed, Idina suffered from the Lupone's!
Then seeing Amanda do it, wow who would have guessed thats what the song was about!
It doesn't matter what Schwartz said. The name Toto appears in all of Baums books that Dorothy appears in. Sounds to me like interview Schtick.
The other funny thing is they weren't supposed to use images from the original movie like the Ruby Red Slippers, however the Wicked Witch being green is directly from the movie and not the Baum books.
If I recall correctly in the show on Broadway they say cyclones.
I also don't think that Elphaba being green was something that was considered base from the movie. It could be because it was in the Wicked novel. I know that Mguier got the whole idea of Elphaba being green if it wasn't in the original novel (I don't know if the wicked witch being green was from the novel or the film because I never read the original novel) from the movie. But, maybe they were able to get passed it because it was in the book which the show is based on. I don't know this is just a guess.
But, I do know that things like the Jewled shoes instead of ruby ones were because the ruby ones were from/in the movie and that was why they had to start out jewled instead of ruby red.
Winston, The description of the Wicked Witch in Baum's OZ books, is used almost word for word in Schwartz's "Thank Goodness"( eg, She has one eye that stays awake at night etc.). From the illustrations, she was short (about Dorothy's hieght had a patch over one eye, straw hair and wore a peaked hat, but she was not Green. McQuire took the green witch from the image of the MGM movie.
The design team could not use things like the hour glass, or the crystal ball because they were images tied to the film. Perhaps the image from the movie of a green witch has become so iconic in general that they were able to get by with it.
