Ok so heres my review for the 3/9 mattinee of La Cage aux Folles...
I'll start with the cast:
Daniel Davis is giving a wonderful performance. Its truly a gripping, wonderful role and he pulls it off which such ease. His singing voice was literally shocking. It was great. He was very very good and very convincing.
Gary Beach. Oh, I love him so much but he just didnt meet my expecatations at all. I Am What I Am is supposed to be a pinnacle in the show. The song that leaves people crying and cheering and moved but he didnt pull it off. He started off great but he just didnt seem...urgent enough towards the end...I must sound stupid by saying that but at the end and throughout the whole song, Albin should be gripping and powerful but Gary didnt pull it off. He was much better in the second act, I must say. Its an OK performance, all in all.
Gavin Creel is wonderful and really convincing. He's doing great in the show.
The Cagelles are amazingly talented. They are truly phenomenal actors and singers. One of the, if not THE best chorus' on Broadway.
I must say that Michael Benjamin Washington was the best part of the show. He stole every friggin scene! He was uproarously funny and should win the Supporting Actor Tony without a doubt.
The show:
Eh. It was an okay production, IMO. It just seemed kinda boring to me. I think it all began to fall apart after I Am What I Am, which is supposed to be, as I said, the biggest brassiest number in the show and the climax but it just didnt work, therefore, for me, there was no climax and the show didnt pick up the pace at all. I know Im being vague about it but I cant put my finger on what was missing but I think thats the closest I can get. Im sorry I cant give anymore details but Im tired and my brains not functioning fully LOL. Ill post tomorrow with more.
All in all: **1/2
Is it worth seeing? I think so. Its not an awful show at all but its not phenomenally good. I'm stuck between two and three stars.
I agree as well - it just didn't do it for me, especially Beach. The only part I disagree with is your review on Davis...I didn't find him as thrilling, but I'm in the minority on that. Good job!
When I saw it Gary was out, and his u/s was absolutely great.
I also agree with your review, I'd give it 3.5/5
I would've loved to have seen Bryan in the role. He is so talented. I thought Gary was good, actually. Better than adequate, but not great.
