From what I've read, the book was optioned to be a movie (non-musical) a few years before the musical ever came up but they were having some problems. When Stephen Schwartz read the book, he thought it would make a great musical, he approached Universal with the idea and they agreed to go a broadway musical rather than a movie. Separate from that is whether or not there will be a movie-musical based on the show, which as everyone has been saying, if it does happen will probably be years from now. At least that's my opinion

Once again people, Christina is NOT gonna be Elphaba. It has to be Avril Lavigne!

Yes Oscars - It will be tied with Christina and Brittany for Best Actress.
David will get Best Supporting Actor.

It will also be directed by Danny Wood (Of NKOTB fame) who will lose the Oscar to Barbra Streisand, directing the remake of Funny Girl, as she also reprises her role, with co-star Macauley Culkin - who plays Nick Arnstein, and also wins the Oscar that year.

Best Picture that year will go to
Barkas, Umbrella's and Two Princes
(The story of Michael Jackson's kids)
