I have heard weird rumors about Wicked being so awesome that they want to make it into a movie. Does anyone know if thats true or if there is any info? I really hope they dont, seeing as they butchered Phantom, at least vocally
i haven't heard that but with the plethora of movie musicals in the works it does sound possible. Some have worked well but it really depends on the direction and talent
A film version has been in talks since 2000. However, not based on the musical, but on the novel. So the film would be non-musical, and the plot would be VERY different.
This was the status in 2000. Don't know if Universal is still considering.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

This is why I hate when people post things like "BRITNEY SPEARS TO STAR IN WICKED," because it's false. She would LIKE to be in WICKED. There is no movie announced - it has been said that they would like to make it into a movie at some point. Nothing has been announced so as of now, a movie is not in the works. It makes me crazy!
"If you are going to do something, do it well. And leave something witchy."-Charlie Manson
I was thinking about this the other day. I think WIcked could actually make a pretty good movie-musical if done right. I think the following songs would translate remarkably on film
No One Mourns the Wicked The Wizard and I What is this Feeling One Short Day Defying Gravity Thank Goodness No Good Deed
Dont misunderstand, I'm not saying that it is, I have just heard things thats all. I really would like Wicked the book to be a musical. Its a very rich plot, still would be hard to do and convey well. It reminds me of Ella Enchanted though, WONDERFUL book, and what happened with the movie
i think both options (the book and musical) would make a great movie. They are so different that it would be interesting to have the two constasting aspects.
Back when Rent first opened, DeNiro saw it and fell in love. He bought the film rights, as well as putting Daphne Rubin-Vega and Wilson Jermaine Heredia in "Flawless".
It took them ten years to start filming.
Wicked's not going to be in any theatre near you in the near future.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
This movie is 5-10 years down the road -- if it even becomes a musical movie at all.
There was talk when the book first came out that Demi Moore had optioned the rights to do the book as a miniseries for ABC.
I think that is obviously unlikely to happen now as well -- but I think its safe to assume that when the movie does get around to being made that Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith will be way too old unless they film the movie through the same gauze they used for Lucille Ball in MAME.
Yes, Idina will be in her 40's, and so will Kristin - unless they do two young versions while they're in Shiz. Then again, they had Madonna playing a 15 year old Evita - which so did not work.
By te time the movie comes out Dakota Fanning will be playing Glinda.

I mostly lurk and this is my first post...from what I understand, the stage rights and movie rights are one and the same. Schwartz approched the owner of the film rights of the book to turn it into a musical for Broadway, and the person in charge of the rights was more than happy to agree. I think it's a safe bet that if and when a movie appears, it will be the musical (though, it is always a possibility more of the book will be included in a film version). As far as casting, Chenoweth mentioned in an interview that for casting the film version (if any), she has right of first refusal. There is no reason to believe that Menzel doesn't have a similar clause. But I digress, I think by the time it does make it to the screen it will not matter, they'll be too old (and Brittany Spears will have long since faded into obscurity)
There is usually a time limit to "first refusal" clauses -- and I think they'll be in the safe zone of having to cast a 65 year old Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, if the movie takes that long to be made.
Universal may own the rights to the book and the musical, so it may have been a non-issue, but sometimes making a movie musical of a book or a movie can be very tricky, because ownership can be scattered -- for example, if Sony owned the rights to the musical SUNSET BOULEVARD, they would still have to get permission from Paramount because they own the source material.
There actually have been talks of a movie musical but if it does happen they will cast Idina and Kristin unless its many years away which recently it does not sound so. I think it would be an incredible movie but I must say if they do a movie I highly doubt that Norbert Leo Butz would play Fieryo and I also wonder what they would choose to do with Boq.

the whole Britney Spears thing is an ugly rumor and there is nothing definate right now. The rights to haven't been purchased by any studio as far as I know so why would there be casting already if nothing has been set, no director, producers etc. TenorGod, Thank you for starting this thread, I'm offically worn out by the other one. But I won't be surprised that if this movie will be made eventually or within 10 years or so. I really hope they do make a movie out of this and do it right.

I guess your right Munkstrap. People didn't post on my thread.
Oh..but here's a little trip down memory lane for ya Munkstrap! Remember some of these from your 12 POSTS?

And I doubt this will ever happen
re: Brittany Wants to Get 'Wicked' Posted On:3/18/05 at 03:21:33 PM WHAT? You better be joking. Britney will never get the role, she can't sing it.
re: Brittany Wants to Get 'Wicked' Posted On:3/18/05 at 03:30:36 PM You're absolutely wrong, stop sounding so pretentious. A lock? Hardly. I enjoy her performances and her stage presence, but she hardly has enough vocal talent for the role. Come on.
re: Brittany Wants to Get 'Wicked' Posted On:3/18/05 at 03:44:09 PM NO! Guys, stop. Relax. There aren't even movie plans for this show announced yet. There is no cast speculation, there is no projected release date, there is no director, there are no producers. THE FILM IS NOT HAPPENING YET - IT IS SPECULATION. Britney would never get the role - please, anyone with a brain knows that. So relax. No petitions necessary.
re: Brittany Wants to Get 'Wicked' Posted On:3/18/05 at 03:50:50 PM IT's a fact that Britney WANTS the role. I want to bang Jude Law, but it's not a fact that it's going to happen.
re: Brittany Wants to Get 'Wicked' Posted On:3/18/05 at 03:52:51 PM What?

why are you being a jerk? I see that you randomly posted that "yeah" on your thread because you want that thread to keep going while all of us want it to go away. How lame
