I actually really enjoyed this book! The characters are great in it!

The novel is fantastic.

A highly intelligent and wonderfully written work.

Agreed. I really thought it was a well written, well thought out book as well as a satire on our nature to "evil-ize" people, as well as a political commentary. The musical doesn't even begin to compare.

I love Gregory Maguire. He's an amazing author.

May the chantings of burn the witch begin. lol

my favorite character in the Wicked book I think is Boq cuz he has a great character..loyal friend and all that jazz (and no im not just saying that for chris, in the book boq really is my fav. character)

i LOVE the book, i may even venture to say i love the book more than the musical. the plot is too simplified in the musical - many vital parts are cut. i fell in love with the book before i even knew it was going to be a musical.

Boq has always been my favorite character. Especially in the book. I thin Chris Fitz does an excellent job but its not his fault they turned him into a completely differnet character in the musical.

agreed eponine

and from the very first time i read the book when wicked wasnt a musical yet, boq was my favorite, my second favorite would have to be..crope and tibbett, they're kinda funny and cute in a quirky way know what i mean? (they're characters at least)

I'm just really annoyed how they over-simplified everything and turned into some...family-oriented spectacle (which I enjoyed) but doesn't address the issues of destiny, etc.

tsk tsk.

I love the book. Its deffinately more intelligent than the musical, they did over-simplify in the transition to stage. Seriously, some of the things didn't need to be changed.

I loved Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and I'm currently reading Mirror Mirror

I really enjoyed Wicked. I liked Confessions, but not as much as Wicked. Mirror was not that interesting to me. I hope he's not declining in his writing.

i have just started the book. i'm up to boq right now. i love it, i think it's really good. i find it better to see the play then read the book after because you won't compare it so much as "oh they changed this from the book" i see it as oh, from the book they chose this and this to use. that sounds a little confusion

ohh zepka. don't worry. there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

and yes, this book was very well-written. I couldn't put it down!

I too feel that while I know musical-writers can only put in about 2 hours of material, alot of stuff was left out!

Wow, I see that most of you here loved the book. I hated it!
But I love the music from the cast recording and I'm looking forward to seeing the show later this month.

I've read his first three (Wicked, Confessions, Lost) and am reading Mirror, Mirror. All three were brilliant, but very different. My favorite was probably Confessions, just because of the language he uses, and it's taken at a slower pace than some of his other novels.

I LOVED the book... Boq was my favorite character, too bad they completely ruined him in the show. I must say that the show wasn't as enjoyable as it could have been for me because I read the book before seeing it. Wicked (the book version) would make an AMAZING movie.

yeah Mirror, Mirror and Confessions were great as well! But how was Lost? was it scary? im a tad bit frightened to read that for fear its scary...

and i agree about the book in a movie!!

well you can't compare the musical and the book... the musical is entertaining, the book is really moving. I love both. you can guess by my screen name. :)
Yes, boq should have at least got a solo :)

The book was so much darker and richer than the musical - I'll take the book any day.

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

"well you can't compare the musical and the book"

Sure you can. The musical was based on the book. It kept the same title and they even sell copies of the book in the theatre lobby.

The book was far superior to the musical. The musical is fun and funny, but only retained the most basic elements of the book and completely abadonded the story. It's cute family fare, but not nearly as interesting as the novel.

I read somewhere that Maguire is currently writing a sequel to Wicked. Since the ending of the book is very different from the musical, I wonder which character it will be about.

Sally, when i first saw Lost in the bookstore, i thought it was Maguire's take on Hansel & Gretel, as told from the witch's point of view... i was wrong...
