After much thought...

Midtowngym: It is not reasonable to expect that a theater will usher small groups of people in to see an actor for an audience.

I know from your post that you consider this part of their job but it is not and people in NYC may be spoiled by having this access. But, signing at the stage door is not something that every actor does.

They are paid to perform and if they do that well, that's the extent of their obligation to the audience. If they CHOOSE to sign...so be it.

As for actor's expectations in restaurants etc...these perks are given by society and by virtue of the fact that they have become famous and recognizable in some way...that doesn't mean that in return we get an access pass to their lives. I've seen people walk up to a celeb at dinner and interrupt a conversation to get an autograph and/or picture. It does get tiresome.

Why is it so difficult...

...to put yourself in someone else's place?

It must be dreadful having people demanding your time everywhere you go. Think about it! Imagine finally getting out of work after a high-pressure day, and having people stopping you all the way home to talk to you, ask you to "say something funny" (as I once saw someone ask Nathan...), sing, dance, pose for pictures, stand on your head and whistle "Dixie"...just really THINK about it. After a few YEARS of this, wouldn't you dread it everytime a complete stranger called you by your first name on the street? I think Nathan is remarkably composed. From what I've seen, if he isn't up to it, he just goes about his business and tries to keep to himself. He doesn't "bite" unless provoked...and who could blame him?

Why should someone's mood/personality off-stage matter so much? If you were terribly ill, and there was a doctor who worked miracle cures, would you really give a crap if he wasn't the friendliest Brady in the bunch!? No, you would want him to do his thing! Well...Nathan's just doing his thing! Let the man be!!
