I don't think her voice could handle it.
Why does everyone expect a fully realized acting performance from a TV appearance well before the show has even started previews? Give the girl a break!
Assuming this performance was sanctioned by the production, I do think it's fair to evaluate. If a component of your "marketing" isn't ready, you don't put it on television. This isn't a recording of her in rehearsal.

I don't expect to see a fully realized performance. I do expect to see some potential, particularly in terms of the performers ability to connect to the material emotionally and for someone like Riley it's a matter of whether she has the emotional maturity to connect with such a desperate, heartwrenching moment. I don't see that in this or her performance of the song in Glee, so maybe it's a matter of her getting there in performance. I didn't think Jennifer Hudson could pull off Shug Avery and she surprised me.

Yeah, she surprised me too... And then I saw Heather Headley, and found JHud's performance to be bland, uninspired and boring.
Riley definitely has a voice that seems like it would be suited for Dreamgirls. She has a big sound that seems inherently consistent with what we've come to associate with Dreamgirls through J Hud's and Jennifer Holiday's performances.
Was a fan of her work on Glee for years, and always thought she had the talent and ability to pull off a production of a more substantial length (not going to name names, but many TV/Hollywood folks do what I call "Hollywood Bowl" type engagements and stick to those. I love the clips I've seen of Hollywood Bowl shows as much as the next person (haven't been able to see a show live there, to my regret), but a lot of the stars who appear in their work wouldn't commit to longer Broadway runs for myriad reasons (stamina, scheduling issues, lack of a desire to do a show 8 times a week for a longer run) - Riley seems different!
For me, the problem with Amber has always been her acting. Her voice is incredible, there's no debate about that, but her acting has always left much to be desired. She has had some ok performances, but for the most part, she's never really come across as fully genuine to me, and in some cases, makes strange acting choices. I'd be curious to see what people think of her performance in this show. (for all I know she's been working on that)
If the show is a critical and box office hit in the West End, it almost seems like a no brainer that Amber would transfer over to BW with it. That "if" is still big however.
As to her singing performance on Graham Norton, it was fine, and if anything a full out acting performance would have looked a bit odd and out of place. Have no idea how her acting will be once the production starts.

I definitely think this will transfer to Broadway, even if it's just a limited engagement. And what's with all the hate with Amber Riley? She's a phenomenal talent. Her number in NBC's The Wiz was the best part of that show (fight me).
