Oh, I know about the Biltmore. I was actually extremely excited when I found out that they were going to renovate it. An old director of mine was actually part of the renovation. When I saw "The Tale of the Allergists Wife" (GREAT play) at the Barrymore, I passed the Biltmore when it was in it's dilapidated state and wondered when someone was going to refurbish such a prime Broadway location.
But, I did not know the Barrymore was Shubert owned. I did think it needed to be refurbished when I saw "Wife", and I am glad to hear it was taken care of before "Sly Fox." BTW, who is the next tennent for the Barrymore?
I heard something about "Mambo Kings" which is set to open in August moving into the Broadway, so I don't think thats where "Sweet Charity" will end up. Maybe the Virginia if Little Women can't survive (although I hope Little Women sticks around). Also, possibility of the Marquis if La Cage can't make it.
Mambo Kings is slotted for the Broadway.
And when I suggested the Atkinson, I know very well DEMOCRACY is there - I don't really need to be told that. Someone claims that it's not going anywhere, but do you honestly think DEMOCRACY will still be running when charity would start previewing? I highly doubt it - that's not the kind of show that has longevity. Good reviews don't keep things like that running - smart theatregoers run out very quickly.
I'm still pulling for the Gersh.
But I think it will end up at the Hirsch. Even maybe the Plymouth.
Yes, Democracy will still be running when Sweet Charity begins previews.
As far as the Atkinson or the Plymouth, I imagine a show the size of Charity could be shoehorned into one of those theatres, but with 1,000-1,100 seats respectively, there's very little profit margin. I'm not certain that either would be what the Weisslers would be looking for.
