rhonda farer was standby for lead in they're playing our song, got promoted to full time lead after stockard channing left, played it for 3 mos then went back to standby (though uncredited in the playbill) when anita gillette took over. it does happen but i think it's pretty rare.

In 1987, I saw A Chorus Line with Laura Gamache as Cassie and Wanda Richert as one of the cut dancers and understudying Cassie as well. This after Wanda Richert had peformed Cassie on tour and previously on Broadway.
Might be nice actually...having two girls as the lead...never having to worry if your going to get an understudy for elphaba...it would be either Eden or Anna. Believe me though I am SO GLAD that Eden is doing LA
