She is her generation’s Audrey Hepburn.
TIME magazine went further and declared that not even Garbo had Miss. Robert’s following or clout!
She may never be Cherry Jones.
But then Cherry Jones will never be Julia Roberts.

Well honey, considering the whole run is sold out, no, it is not going to matter.
Natey and Matt got below par reviews, extended twice and are still sold out the window.
Exactley!
And she is a superstar of gigantic proportions which can not be said for Lane/Broderick.
Of course she will be critic proof...and she'll present some big awards at the Tonys...blah blah blah....maybe she'll again say "I LOVE IT UP HERE!"
Pray she does all of the above - The TONY Ratings could use any boost!
I have to admit -- I don't get starstruck easily, but the chance of seeing her made me willing to put full price for a (farily sucky) ticket on my AmEx, so that's saying something.
I want to clarify and say that I usually enjoy her as an actress and I'm sure she'll be fine, but let's face it, if she had starred in 'In My Life,', the Music Box would have a sold out hit on it's hands and the people over at "Wicked" would be biting their nails.
Gary Marshall once told a story about her:
They were filming RUNAWAY BRIDE in a very small town.
The cast and crew made every effort to be kind and personable to the people in the town.
Crowds would form around where they were filming...and the cast would take turns and go over and talk to the townfolk.
He said when he would go over they would all laugh and ask how his sister was.
When Gere would go over the girls would scream and hug him.
When Julia went over, people would just start crying. SHE had to ask THEM if they wanted autographs because they couldn't form words.
He thought to himself that it was one thing to be a star and it was quite another thing to be Julia Roberts.
Heh... I can totally relate to that!
I collect autographs for a fundraiser I do and Julia Roberts was in town for an event at Lincoln Center and I really wanted to meet her and ask her to sign for me. I went to Lincoln Center the night before the event to kind of scope it out and when I found what I think was the closest they had to a stagedoor, there was a black SUV outside and a couple of guys with cameras, so, I decided to wait and see if she'd come out.
I'd like to think that I've gotten less starstruck over the course of three years of doing this, but, when someone came out who I thought was her, I got a little weak in the knees and sick to my stomach at the thought of talking to her (weird!). And that was just a false alarm!
When she *did* come out, she was totally nice, but, I did feel those things again.
I think I managed to eek out *some* coherency, but, I definitely found myself a little more overwhelmed talking to her and asking for her autograph then I had for just about anybody I'd encountered to that point.
I don't understand, her appeal. Please explain this to me because I feel like the only person on the planet who doesn't get it. She's a great actress, I enjoy her movies, but why does everyone love her?
Star Quality.
You said it, Michael.
Star Quality! Bingo!!!
I don't see star quality, I see a glorified homcoming queen. I think Nicole Kidman, or Cate Blanchette have far more star quality.
Julia Robert's is the most fiscally sucessful actress of her or any other generation.
Billions in worldwide tickets sales.
And not just for a year or two but for 16 years!
I know.
I just don't understand why.
What I find to be funny is that she used to be the highest paid actress in Hollywood up until a few months ago.
Now, it's Reese Witherspoon.
Now, I love me some Reese...but she's no Julia.
I went to Spelling Bee last year in April and Julia was there with her husband. I ad no idea she was in the audience until the show let out and as i walked up the stairs to the street level of Circle in the Square, she was in front of me...I thought, "well, now or never..." I tugged on her coat, and the second she turned around to look at me, I absolutely went blank. She smiled that incredible smile, and I just started to gush over her. No one else even seemed to notice she was there. I was so giddy and excited she had to ask my name after saying, "I'm Julia, what is your name?" For several minutes we talked about the show and then she smiled, hugged me, and jsut walked out into the night with her husband. Honestly...I really do not get too star struck but the moment I saw her looking at me, I just could not keep my cool!!! She is incredible! And I see the show on April 11th!!

She's got "it" -- that indefinable, unteachable thing that a handful of actors, singers and dancers have that makes you unable to take your eyes off of them. No one knows where "it" comes from or why some people have "it," but Roberts does. I don't think she's necessarily a great actress -- though she's a good one -- but she oozes a certain charisma that makes her larger than life and that makes her performances memorable.
She has that ability to give you the "lump in the back of your throat" with just one look.
It's undescribable. So few actresses are able to do that.
But it's an art that she's mastered.
I'm going to go a little James Lipton for a mo.
For her work in "Erin Brockovich", Julia Roberts won the following "Best Actress" Awards:

Mighty impressive!

Julia Roberts is one of my least favorite actresses. I place her on a level with the Demi Moores, Meg Ryans and Drew Barrymores of the world. Her performance in Erin Brockovich is possibly th emost overrated of the past decade. That Oscar belonged to Ellen Burstyn. Bjork, Gillian Anderson and Laura Linney all gave superior lead perfromances that year. Roberts has also given some of the most embarrassing film performances in recent memory: Pretty Woman, Sleeping with the Enemy, Mary Reilly, I Love Trouble, Runaway Bride, The Mexican, Michael Collins, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Mona Lisa Smile... I was hoping she'd finally retire after the twins.
Think this performance will garner her a Tony nom? I mean she is Julia Roberts....another race that would plug some viewers into the Tony's...If I didn't do theatre and knew she was up for an award I'd probably tune in to see the out-come...And would she be considered leading actress or featured actress? I didn't get to see any plays on my trip so I'm not sure how the race is this year in those two categories...
Cheers,
Christopher

She will almost certainly be nominated for Lead Actress.

I have to stick up for Julia Roberts.
Her huge appeal comes from the fact that she has this immense star quality but her star quality is mixed in with the fact that she seems like someone you could relate to, and someone you would want as a friend and would get along with.
