Will they record Pal Joey?

It's eerily similar to the 1933 production of "Gay Divorce" where every critic mentioned that nobody in the cast (Fred Astaire included) could be heard over the orchestra most of the time and when they did, none of them could carry the Cole Porter tunes. Fred had a weak voice, Clair Luce had a weak voice, Eric Rhodes and Eric Blore couldn't really sing well and the all-girl chorus werewn't hired for their vocal capabilities.
What the hell were they thinking then? What the hell are they thinking now?

Whoa, allofmylife, where are you going with that? Fred Astaire was not Ezio Pinza, but he was a musician, and he didn't need nine hours to learn to get the pitches on his song accurately.
The Pal Joey situation is a whole 'nother ball park.

Posted: 12/19/08 at 7:59amThe show probably won't stay open long enough for them to have a recording.

Posted: 12/22/08 at 3:48amLadydramaturg, Fred could sing but his voice was very thin. Onstage, he was often overwhelmed by the orchestra but when he danced, nobody minded. I have found articles in British newspapers mentioning this. Stage Magazine gave Gay Divorce a scathing review because nobody in the cast could sing (a common note in most of the Gotham reviews.) When Fred was in a recording studio, six inches from a microphone, THEN he could sing because he didn't have to force that reedy voice to fill a hall (and remember I ADORE him, this isn't news). Nobody could deliver a song like Fred Astaire. But filling a theater was not his forte.

Posted: 12/22/08 at 12:27pmAll of that already did happen. This is just a bad revival and a sad revival because it will be the only revival for a long time. So much better was hoped for. They promised pie in the sky but delivered poo on the shoe.

Posted: 12/22/08 at 2:10pmI really hope this gets recorded. I'll buy it in a snap so I can play Stockard's Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered for people who can't believe there's anything more unbelievable than Florence Foster Jenkins singing the Queen of the Night aria.

Kids you need to calm yourselves ... Stockard is not that bad. She yes has some vocal limits to her voice... but the emotion and work that goes into the delivery of the lyric over powers any lack of vocal ability for me at least.
I found the production charming, clever and entertaining. Granted there are some things I would change but this is not horrible. This is a time when I feel lucky that a show that is not likely to be well liked or even have a long run even got revived. So I am thankful for that.

Posted: 12/22/08 at 4:40pmI thought Channing was the least of the productions worries. I wish the director had done something with her big solo to take the emphasis off her singing, and instead put the focus on the words and the situation.
