I am going to be at the opening night of Wishful Drinking and am curious if I should wear something a little dressy?
I never go to a show wearing sweats or anything like that, I always wear approriate attire. But this being my first opening night show I was curious if I should wear anything diffrent.
I believe opening nights are black-tie.
If you look at opening night photos from other shows on this website, you can get an idea of what people wear. Usually it is dressier than usual, but by no means must you wear a black-tie suit.

I love opening nights and miss the seasons where I attended each and every one of them. For me, they're an excuse to get all sorts of dressed up - more than I normally would. Im not saying suit and tie and all that, but a jacket and a nice shirt is totally acceptable. I would stay away from jeans for sure

Honestly. Unless you're an invited guest and attending the party, no one cares what you wear.
I just got an email here in my office at Roundabout and here is what it says:
"Appropriate business attire is required – NO JEANS OR SNEAKERS. If you are going to send a friend to the show, PLEASE make sure they are aware of the dress code, too."
I've seen many men pair converses or brightly colored sneakers with dress pants for opening night parties, it's not even funny.
Anyway, I stand by what I said, unless you're at the party, it really doesn't make a difference.

Apparently it does to the theatre, or they wouldn't have sent out the email.

Whenever tickets are available to the public, there are always asshats who show up in t-shirts and jeans. It's to be expected.
My thinking is this:
There is sure to be press at such an event and the possibility of you being photographed is decent. You might end up in the background of some photo or video footage. I would suggest you not wear anything that would make you look at the photo and say "I can't believe I wore that!"

Just wear the outfit from your headshot.

It's about respect. Even if you're not attending the party.
Frankly, it makes me sad that there are people out there who act like going to the theatre is the same as going to the movies.

Which is the same thing as sitting in their living room talking at the top of their lungs in front of their TV screen.

Which is the exact reason I don't go to the movies, Namo lol
Aside from seeing Sex and the City in theaters, the only other movie I've seen recently was taking the kids to see Twilight. Let me tell you, if I could have beat everyone in that movie theater I think I may have. One arguing with her boyfriend. Another on his cell, giving a blow by blow of the movie. A group of kids gossiping about something that'd happened earlier that day at school.
If you want to BS, wait for the dvd and talk through that at home lol
