YAY! A Concert version of "Working," perhaps one of the most underappreciated, underproduced musical of all time is happening!

I can't wait, and can't believe I'm gonna have to miss it...le sigh

Posted: 1/25/07 at 11:09pmI find "Working" quite wonderful and moving. I've only seen the video of the musical as it was done on PBS I believe. It's available on DVD, put out by the Broadway Theater Archive, as distributed by Kultur. Have you seen it? It features Barry Bostwick, Rita Moreno, Barbara Barrie, Barbara Hershey, Eileen Brennan, James Taylor, Patti LaBelle, Charles Durning, and Beth Howland among others.

re: Working in Concert!#3
Posted: 1/25/07 at 11:15pmI saw the original production back in 1978 and I loved it! A few years ago, CAP21 did a production here in New York and it rivaled the original for excellence.

"Working" doesn't really have a cohesive plot. Rather, it's a series of vignettes about people and their jobs. It's based on a book by Studs Terkel. He just toured the country and interviewed people about their jobs.
One of my teachers was in the original production of it.

Studs is a stud! He is man who has devoted his life to the working class.
I also love the show!

Posted: 1/25/07 at 11:49pmI have not seen the PBS broadcast...never heard much good about it. The show is terrific, and a lot of fun to be in...and good for High Schools or Colleges that want to do a big show and cast a lot. I kinda want Lillas White to be in it and sing "If I Could've Been." I figured this would be perfect for AFA, it'd only be a matter of time.

Posted: 1/25/07 at 11:52pmI love "It's An Art" it is such a great song...I love a lot of the music in that show and you can totally tell which composer wrote which song. "Fathers and Sons" is very moving.

Posted: 1/26/07 at 12:11amWe need a new recording! The OBC is a little sup par!

There is...it's awful...and the OBC is not sub-par. Lynne Thigpen is STELLAR on "If I Could've Been" and "Cleaning Women." "Just a Housewife" breaks my heart, as does "Millwork." And, how can you resist the wonderful disco break-down during the opening number?

Posted: 1/26/07 at 12:42amI love these songs! With all the money that he has from Wicked, why not mount a nice revival of Pippin and Working?????

Posted: 1/26/07 at 12:48amOh! I really hope I can see this! I became a hughe fan of the show after doing it in high school (I played Mike and sang Fathers and Sons). It's such a moving show and the cast sounds great :)

Becca, it was not a "little thing." It was an extremely polished, highly professional production that was extraordinary on any level, let alone for a school production.
I happened to see it because I am a friend of the show's musical director. We've worked together many times.

Mr Roxy, you must not have seen her in The Robber Bridegroom, because from all accounts, THAT was a sight not to be forgotten. My parents saw it and, for better or for worse, La LuPone was NEVER unknown to them ever again.
