re: Worried about Stro's Directorial debut in THE PRODUCERS

Brooks and Stroman worked hand in hand on the musical stage version and I'm sure will work closely on the film. No one will want to flounder here. Musicals are expensive propositions and this one is no exception.

I think you have to give them a chance to prove what they can do and don't get too tied up in who has or has not directed in film before. There are plenty of experts around to help with the details and a good solid cast. And in the end, Brooks will take care of his baby...as for him being too old to direct...we should ALL have half the energy this guy has!

You know, Julie Taymor did quite nicely for herself directing Frida. Give Stro a chance.

Actually, Julie Taymor's first feature film was Titus, which was magnificent and better than Frida (although I liked that, too). Before those, she's had experience in filmmaking with some short films and specially-recorded stage performances and such.

re: Worried about Stro's Directorial debut in THE PRODUCERS

I think the key thing to look for is who the Director of Photography is. A good DOP who is @ least familiar w musical staging for films will be what she ( yes Mel) will need to rely on. She does not yet have the language of film to work out the set ups, POV's Turn Arounds, lenses etc that could be her stumbling block.
So tell me who the DOP is & I'll tell u how the show will go!!

Gee, sabrelady if only it were as simple as knowing the cinematographer.

A film's success (like a show on the boards) has to do with the entire mix (actors, director, funding, chemistry, cinematography, music, etc., etc., etc. In the case of a musical, there are even more variables. You've got a lot of good people who know musicals and film in the mix...AND you also have Nicole...and I still don't like that she's there...though I'm sure she'll draw box office receipts. It's a delicate balance of all of those things and it's hard to predict success or failure. I'm excited to see the outcome.

This sucker better be filmed in three-strip IB Technicolor, or there will be HELL to pay.
